Hello all -
Let me first preface that I am new to precision rifles and have learned a lot from reading here and appreciate the wealth of information that everyone has shared here.
I have gone back and forth countless times due to being OCD - it makes me not be able to make up my mind...
Ok - so I was bent on getting a Rem 700 SPS (either Tactical or Varmint), found a shop close to me that had both went in today with the purpose of purchasing one or the other. Big debate was the barrel size 20" vs the 26".
After talking with an older gentleman that shoots comp long shooting I told him that I really wanted to learn the art of shooting long and understand it and that I knew I had a long long road and a lot of rounds coming my way. We discussed my need for the 300 Winmag down line for taking hunting trips out west and how .308 would be a great caliber to start with.
Having said that I already have a Savage 11/111 Trophy hunter XP in .308 that my wife is taking over and we will get it to fit her. So I thought naturally I could get another .308 and why not a savage until I started researching and everyone recommend the .308 Rem 700 SPS Varmint. I asked the gentleman at the shop and said sure, you could get that - then throw away the stock, get a new barrel, get a new trigger and take the action out and have it fine tuned by a smith...and have a great expensive rifle. But for what I am doing the Savage 12 precision out of the box with the precision stock and precision accu-trigger was a really fine weapon for a lot more cost effective option - yet they are ugly and he likes a custom built all around rifle - however that is not for everyone.
So sorry for the long winded post there -
I only found the .308 in the Savage 10 models and the 12 in 243, 260 and 6.5 Creedmoor.
So what is the difference between these two models?
Also any advice on the hunt for a 300 Winmag would be appreciated also.
Thank you all in advance.
