Help verifying a family member's military history

My grandfather died a few years before I was born, and from what I am told, he rarely talked about is WWII exploits. What little I know has been pieced together from various family members.
I am pretty sure he was in the 10th Mountain Division, but that's about as far as I have gotten.

What options do I have to verify this or to help dig deeper?

The best way to start is by getting a copy of his DD214. The archives.gov website already mentioned will help you with that. There is a lot of info on the DD214 and if you're not from a military background you may need to find someone who can help you interpret it. I'm not looking at mine at the moment but I believe it lists all the units served in and specifically the units served in during combat. It will also show his rank, MOS, and special skills.

From there, you can hit up the many organizations that support specific units such as the 10th Mountain association. If it were me, I would try to get specifics on orders of battle all the way down to platoon level. Units change and re-flag all the time so it will be a major task to get detailed information. Good luck.
