I have a Rem 700 SS R5 Milspec 24" bbl in .308. I dont have much experience with bolt action guns and I'm having a minor issue. i'm sure it's user error. After I fire, when I pull the bolt back, occasionally, it doesn't pick up a round as I slide the bolt back forward again. I'm guessing that i either 1) dont have the rounds seated in the internal magazine just right or 2) the spring isnt seated in the hinged floor plate properly. the spring slides back and forth with about a 1/2" of play right where it seats in the floor plate. Any suggestions?

More than likely your spring is bent in that the rear of the follower is canted downward. You can bend the spring a little so the rear is correctly flush, just never bend at the middle of the spring. Also make sure not to bend too much, or the bullet tip will jam in to the feed ramp.

What is the proper position? Like I said, the spring can slide forward & back by 1/2" where it connects to the floor plate. Should I slide the spring to it's rearmost position, or forward all the way?

I will try this. I just want to make sure that I have the spring seated properly on the floorplate (see above posts) It has to matter where the spring is positioned.

Re: help w/ loading issue

And now I just realized that there is some play where the spring attaches to the follower. I am assuming that the spring should be pushed all the way forward on the floor plate and on the follower. That would seem to be "fully inserted"
