Started loading up some rounds for my factory remington sps-v with a 26" barell, i know 4064 is not the best for 175 smk but it is all i have and is available at the moment so with that said does anybody have any good loads to try with 4064? it shoots the 168's with 4064 just fine 1/2 to 1/4 moa pretty reliably. thanks for any input

Re: help with 4064 and 175's

This was a great load in my KMW wit 24" Krieger and 95 Palma chamber:

- Lapua brass
- F210M
- SMK 175
- 42.4 gr IMR4064
- 2.805 OAL

ES: 22
AV: 2658
SD: 8.4

Re: help with 4064 and 175's

Mine is slightly different. But it's my favorite 1K load.

- Lapua brass
- Win LR
- SMK 175 or Berger 175 (not VLD)
- 42.2 gr IMR4064
- 2.825 OAL for the bolt gun

Re: help with 4064 and 175's

Hodgdon list 45.6 grains 4064 as a max (compressed) load with a 175. I've been running 45.0 grains over a 175 SMK in my Savage F/TR, CCI standard large primer, Lake City surplus brass, ~2.8" oal. The F/TR has a 30 inch barrel, and I'm getting 2790 fps with a standard deviation under 20 fps. Accuracy is well under 1 MOA.

The primers do flatten out with this load, but bolt lift is fine. Work up your own loads carefully, as always.

Re: help with 4064 and 175's

thanks guys i will work up some loads over the week and shoot them this coming weeknd and Victor how is the velocity on that 42.2g load once you start getting out to distance? my testing methods could use some refinmnet i believe, i loaded up 5 rounds of 40.0g 41.0 42.0 43.0 to start with and then wich ever shot the best i broke down even more into the .2's, .4's .6's ect...and then shot again, i will try the 42. grain loads some of you have mentioned even though 42.0 when i fired it was all over, i mean it didnt even group well, but 42.0 is not 42.2 so i will give it a shot thanks for the input!

Re: help with 4064 and 175's

Mine is 44.2 grains of IMR4064, Win case, Fed 210, 2.900" out of an AIAW and Remy 700 XCR. It produces about 2750's fps. Definitely subMOA out very long.

You may need to up it just a bit more. Work up accordingly.

Re: help with 4064 and 175's

does the winchester case have more volume for powder in it? im using federal gmm brass and i notice when i weigh my cases they are significantly heavier than the win's, i bring this up because i get a slightly compressed charge at 43.0 g with an oal of 2.800 would switching brass give me more room for powder? side tracking for alittle bit...

You'll get more room seating the bullet farther out (assuming it can go farther out). To measure how far it is to the lands for any given bullet, take a FIRED case (you want one with a loose neck), DON'T LOAD IT WITH A PRIMER OR POWDER, seat a bullet lightly with your fingers, then feed it into the chamber and close the bolt. Measure how far back the bullet was pushed when you closed the bolt - it is the bullet's contact with the rifling that pushes it back, so this is the distance to the lands. Do this a few times until you are sure you are getting correct and consistent readings (and make sure not to bump it etc when you eject it).

Notice that my 243 win case for the same load, the winchester case has more room than the federal case for the same amount of powder.

Re: help with 4064 and 175's

thanks TT and DHK, so what your saying is if the bullet doesnt get pushed in past my oal im going by now i could seat it further out and in return allow for more powder room? and DHK looks like i will be on the hunt for winchester brass for awhile.
