I will second this recommendation. I think this load is a near copy of the military M118LR load.
I load mine to 2.80". Any longer and it rubs the front of my P-mags.

Yeap.

Also make sure to fully size your brass.

Re: help with load for LR308

I use SMK 168 gr with 44 gr Varget. shoots 1/2 moa out of my LR308 (24" SS barrel) and my 700p. I too load to 2.800 COAL so they will feed in my Magpul's. I also use the same load for 168 gr A-Max's

Just a little advise don't use Federal Gold Medal brass. I use it because its free from work but its really soft brass and the LR308 will chew it up pretty quick if you push loads very hard. It does great in my bolt guns but the AR is a lot harder on brass in general. Enjoy your new rifle they are great but need a new trigger installed or a very good trigger job done on the factory.

178 amax with 43.5 reloader 15 in black hills brass. 2.815 oal works with stamped mags, 2.8 for pmags. runs 2675fps out of my lr308. Shoot 1/2 moa at 500 last time out.

Re: help with load for LR308

For hunting I found these to be excellent:

Sierra #2140 .30 165 Grain HPBT gamekings over 42.5 grs. of Varget in winchester brass with federal 210M primers. Seating them to just under mag length and small base sizing the brass eliminates any feed issues. I also shoot these from my Remington R-25 .308 with amazing results.

Re: help with load for LR308

If you never loaded for a semi-auto, there are some safety considerations. Make sure the primers are all well below flush with the case head.

I'll let the other posters enumerate some other ones like shoulder set back, etc.

Re: help with load for LR308

FL resize and make sure the shoulder gets bumped back about.004.
pressure signs are a little harder because you don't have a bolt to lift. look fore ejector marks, really flat primers and cratering. start below max and work up slowly.

45 Varget behind SMK168 is my AP4's most accurate load at 1/2" in 5-shots. It is max pressure for my particular rifle. 42.5 is runner-up.

I need to try some heavier bullets, though.

Re: help with load for LR308

168 Hornaday hpbt 44.4 GR Varget ocl 2.8
175 SMK 43.2 GR Varget ocl 2.8
I loaded some 185 Berger vld's for hunting but don't remember the powder charge. 41.2 I think.
