Hi experts-
I'm going to work up my first load for my first LR rifle, a new Remington 700 SPS Varmint 26" barrel. I've got 155 Lapua Scenars, Wolf LR primers, new Winchester brass and R15. I plan on using the ladder method and need to know the starting and max load but cannot find the load data for this combination anywhere.

Also, for this rifle, what COAL should I start with? My Lee manual shows an impossibly short maximum. I was thinking about putting a bullet a case and cambering it and see where it goes and maybe back off .015 - .030 as outlined in my book. Good/bad idea?

Thanks!!

Re: Help with load

Ok, first question first, presuming your shooting a 308 Winny, which you don't say:

RL-15 44 min - 49 max ballpark for 150 to 155.5 grain bullets.

Second: If seat your bullets that way, you'll turn a good Remington repeater into a fine single shot rifle. You cannot chase the lands on factory Rem 308 and still feed from a normal factory mag box as the lead is long....

COAL in a repeater is determined to be at least 0.010" under your max mag box length. So if your internal magazine box is 2.850" long, your max COAL would be 2.840" or LESS......

Re: Help with load

Thank you, Bob!!
Sorry 'bout that, yes it's .308 Win.
I have the model with the floorplate and not the cool box mag, but I assume the same size holds true.

He is referring to the length of the magazine which applies regardless of whether it's detachable or blind.

Re: Help with load

D'OH! I just realized that I somehow turned to 307 Winchester in my Lee book instead of 308 Winchester. That explains the short OAL!

Queequeg, thanks for the conformation on the mag length. I did check out Alliant's site but they didn't have anything for R15 and 155's and didn't want to assume anything.

Thanks again, all!

Your can use the same data for 150's or 155's as long as you work up from below (min to max).

Go back through the Alliant site and select rifle powders, then RL-15, then .308 loads. You'll find the choices I list below. These are all max loads so reduce by 10% and work up carefully.

Also look through the reloading depot here and the many, many, many loads posted there to find what others are doing.
