Help with Seating depth?

I'm reloading for my 30-06. I'm using 48.1 gr of Varget with 168 gr A-Max bullets. I used an OAL gage and determined a COAL of 3.805" for my Remington 700. I made a batch of 5 with a COAL of 3.775" (0.03" jump).

The cartridge functioned fine in my rife, but my question is how far does the bullet need to be in the mouth of the case. With my COAL that bullet only seats about .220" into the mouth. Is that enough, or am I creating problems?

Thanks in advance for the help!

+1... The OD of the bullet needs to be from the case mouth to the shoulder with the boat tail inside the case. Anything more is just for sizing length.

Re: Help with Seating depth?

I figured that in my quest to get closer to the rifle lands in a Remington 700 BDL that I would be hard pressed to get there. I guess it will be impossible for me to be between 0.04-0.02" from the lands and still have the diameter in the mouth of the case.

Re: Help with Seating depth?

In MOST factory tubes you can't get close enough to make a real difference. And if you do, you'll have to hand feed single shot style because the rounds won't go in the magazine. Remingtons are well known for having extra long throats. Blame the lawyers.

But if when it wears out and you get a custom barrel and have it custom chambered, you can discuss the issue with your local rifle smith or whoever is doing the job for you. If it's a person that does it a lot he probably has 5 or 10 reamers to choose from. Choose what bullet you like and take a loaded round that works in your magazine to show him. If he knows what you want, he can really make a BIG difference.

Good luck

Off hand, I think my 700 PSS is right at 2.8" and my loads put me .01" away.

You are lucky at that. I have NEVER had a factory tube do that.
