Tossing around the idea of a Hensoldt on a Surgeon 591 repeater action with the built in rail. Is anyone else running this combo right now?

In the LL SH.com review video of the 4-16x56 it looks like the 1" Badgers barely allow the scope to clear the base and barrel, I'm wodering if 1" will work on the Surgeon or if 1.25" will be required.

In my experience, the 591 built in rail sits a little lower than the add on 20moa rails, requiring the next higher rings. For example, a 50mm NXS needing medium rings on a Seekins base needed medium-highs on the Surgeon.

Any thoughts, any experience, any pictures??

AHA....Got that Surgeon/Hensolt bug,aye.

Were watching you Jason,"wringing of hands".That's why you've been selling all that stuff.

Just giving you a hard time,in a nice way of course, haha.

Sorry can't answer your ? about the rings.Better safe than sorry though and get the taller ones.Don't you want the 72mm objective. They're really nice.

I cant show a pic of the Hensoldt but my S&B 5-25x56 cleared on my Surgeon Scalpel .308 with 1" M40A3 rings...both scopes are 34mm tube and 56mm Obj. but there could be a difference I'm not sure...Pic below for reference....

Jason,

I think you should be good to go with the 1" rings.

It has been my experience that the 1.25" rings will mount the 72mm on a sendero/pss contour just fine.

Let us know what you end up going with.

Best,

Nathan

GTr, I think the Hensoldt is a little more compact, would the 1" rings work if the objective was closer to or over the barrel before the taper started?

Nathan, I still have to see if I can get into a Hensoldt for reasonable enough to give it a run. I'm shaking my kids pigging banks!!

Re: Hensoldt on a Surgeon Action - Anyone using it?

Jason, the Surgeon action won't be your limiting factor here. Your barrel profile will be the more important piece of the equation.

For example, I have a Surgeon repeater with an S&B 5-25x56 scope in low Seekins rings (.92" version). This barely clears (.06") my heavy palma contour in this setup. I have tested this to make sure there was no scope barrel bump and as others on the board predicted I was good to go.

If I had an MTU barrel profile, that would have been a no go and I would have opted for the 1" Seekins high rings which wouldn't have been a problem.

So you'll need to check into your barrel profile to see if it will accommodate the 58mm obj on the Hensoldt.

Re: Hensoldt on a Surgeon Action - Anyone using it?

Just got my Hensoldt 4-16x56 yesterday and put them into a set of Talley Tactical's in med and they clear my MTU contour with room to spare.
Oh and Jason, the glass is unreal, I'll type up a little review of sorts after the Comp in LA this weekend. I'll be comparing it to the S&B 5-25 PM11 I've been running.

Re: Hensoldt on a Surgeon Action - Anyone using it?

Jason,

Not sure what the dimensional differences are between a 700 with a Badger 20MOA base and a Surgeon are but my Hensodlt 4x16 x 56 fits perfect with Badger 1" 34mm rings over a heavy Marine Corps contour barrel. I am at an extra job and will try to get a picture for you of the clearence between barrel and scope bell later.

You are going to love that Hensodlt. I ran it at the last Bash and having only run 55 rounds through the gun to get a 100yd zero and qualify on the FBI course of fire I was very pleased with how it performed adjustments made were good to go clarity was super.

i run the USMC badger style rings on a GAP crusader with the Hensoldt and it clears just fine. They are a 1" scope ring so I think you will be just fine.
