I know a few members here are welders, I have run into them at tac-pro. Anyway I am on a project in (well its not Kabul) and this guy was welding above me. There are 3 welders on site and all 3 wear some sort of sunglasses and all 3 keep eyes open while they are doin it! While in college I took welding Tech for a few years for my electives and learned allot, I don't remember learning this method though.

After my wife and I got married, I did welding work both in a shop setting and on construction sites. I always wore the extra flap padded work boots. Sometimes I wore the leather jacket and asbestos apron.

I haven't laid in a muddy ditch and run E6011 or 18 in many years. And I'm glad I haven't.

I have enough problems of my own. He can learn the hard way.

You can buy safety glasses in nearly all shades, including some dark enough for protection from welding rays. I have a couple of sets that only get used when my hood physically won't fit in a confined area. You'll figure out real quick though that your face isn't nearly as tolerant of the welding rays as is the rest of your skin.

If those are #11 shades, then when his face falls off from skin cancer, maybe they can stretch his eyelids to "re-cover" his face.

Yeah, for all the tons of rods I've burnt,,, I wouldn't do that.

I don't care how "uncool" you may think I am..... I ain't stupid.

I used to work with an old timer that would weld without his hood, he would just keep the tip of the gun between the arc and his eyesight. Not the way I've ever done it, but he never got burnt. I don't see how you could do that with a stick welder though...

He's probably keeping the arc covered by the clamp.

Why bother wearing gloves and pants,he might as well go all the way shorts and a t-shirt.I worked in a welding shop for several years and like Sean said the intensity of the arc will give ya nice sunburn with unprotected skin in a short time, let alone your eyes.

    Local National contracted to weld?

US standards of safety generally escape them. Think of ghetto rigging something, but on a whole new and unsafe level.

Re: Here is one for you Welder's out there..

I always wear a hood. Made the mistake of welding in with just a wife beater on one day though. Thought it was only gonna be a couple tacks and it turned out to be 3 hours worth of welding. My shoulders and neck line were so red it would blind you. Too hell with welding without a hood and long sleeve shirt.

I am working with OGA's here, there is not any safety standards like there are with the rest of the mil contracts. Its a free for all. I am the only American on the site and the only person in at least a square mile that has real boots on short of the guards.

Afghanistan man, Afghanistan I bet those shades dont have a lick of UV protection short of just being cool looking shades. There are guys with yellow boards on the roadside with tons of them cheap.

Poke, I gotta admit. I totally missed the location, the first time around.

Things are clearer now, all around. But it will only be for a short time for this guy, I'm sure.

I've given all who served, credit. But now that I am knowing more about what/whom you're serving with,,,,, the first thing that comes to my mind to say is "you all deserve a medal".

But, I know what ya'll think of medals, so that cliche don't fit.

Just remember, there's those here at home who support and respect soldiers. I'd stand for drinks.

If he is in the military then I would bet $100 that his last name is Klinger!! Because he is definitely looking for a section 8 or a medical discharge?? For Lordy sakes he has sandals on!! Tom.

cover for some Gensets. nothing tactical of any sort. But they don't seem to comprehend venting the exhaust out from under it either . I love not working through normal Mil channels but shit I have seen more out there stuff in the last month than almost 2 years in Iraq.
