How do you go about painting the flutes on a barrel. Do you tape them off or paint the whole barrel and then buff it? In other words how do you guys do it.

ive always painted the whole barrel and come back and spin off the paint from the rest of the barrel

Thanks kinda what I was thinking but just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something..

I tape off the flutes with good masking tape, then use fine sand paper to sand off the excess tape around the the edges of the flutes. I remove the tape after curing and you're done.

I taped the barrel with masking tape then roll a marbel with a little pressure down the flutes. Using the marbel to cut the tape with the edge of the flute. Then pull the strip out of the flute with the help of an Exacto knife. Use the knife to cut out the tape that the marble missed. Press down the edges of the remaining tape. Spray with Krylon and let dry. Peel off the tape and clean up overspray with Qtip dipped in acetone.

Air brush the flutes in and then put a little thinner on a rag and wipe the little bit of over spray off. Just wet the rag very little.

That is a very nice look, S&J. I am not sure about the real effectiveness of parallel stripes down the barrel like that as camouflage but for damn sure, it looks nice!
