Hey guys I'm looking for a cheap scope for my 338 lapua to hold me over until I get up enough cash to pick up a nightforce. So far from reading I think I've got it narrowed down to vortex or sightron? Looking for input guys or opinions. Looking to keep the price around $500 if possible. Like I said this scope is just going to be used to hold me over until I get a nightforce.

Re: Hold me over scope?

SS 10x42 is also a good option to choose if fixed power is ok with you.. Otherwise I would go with the vortex. Price wise I would choose the SS..

Re: Hold me over scope?

FWIW, you will find 20X useless for shooting in most summertime situations. Better to get better quality glass in a 10-16x scope than to have a scope with 20x zoom.
I have a nightforce 5.5-22 that I do all my shooting at 11x. Only time I use 22x is to range or maybe to spot hits. And even the nightforce at 22x isn't the greatest sight picture for shooting. Due to the light loss the picture isn't very crisp.
My recommendation is to get something like a vortex 4-16. Or heck, even the millett TRS-1 will hold you over. And at only $300, you can save that extra $200 for the nightforce.
Another option, however, if you have good credit, is to buy the nightforce from www.bearbasin.com. They are offering up to one year SAME AS CASH for purchases of $999 or more.

Re: Hold me over scope?

Vortex is clearing out some of the viper line and the prices are low. Very good deals to be had as long as you are not a stickler for a specific reticule. Cameraland has had the best prices I have found, some of the vipers are lower than the the diamondback line.

Re: Hold me over scope?

Check Camera Land, they have some killer pricing on Vortex Viper closeouts. You may see one that will work. I love all my Viper optics. Found this a longrangehunting.com

Vortex Viper 2-7x32mm riflescope for only $174.99 in your choice of BDC, C3 or V-Plex reticle

Vortex Viper 3.5-10x50mm riflescope with V-Plex reticle for only $249.99

Vortex Viper 4-12x40mm PA riflescope with V-Plex reticle for only $249.99

Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44mm PA riflescope for only $249.99 in your choice of V-Plex or Target Dot reticle

Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50mm PA riflescope with Target Dot reticle for only $279.99

This^

Plus if you're ready to spend $500 why not wait just a bit more and you can even be able to pick-up a used NF here.
I was in the same boat as you, I decided to wait it out until I was able to get what I wanted.

Re: Hold me over scope?

I don't know if I would go with a Vortex Viper for a .338 Lapua, I have a 6-20x50 on my .308 bolt and the eye relief is a bit short. I would be a little nervous with a 338lm.

Re: Hold me over scope?

One of the few that meet your criteria is the Falcon 5-25.
If it is truly a stop gap measure and you don't want to be out a lot of money you could also look to the Millet LRS (not the TRS).
If I had the money to spend on a .338 LM, I think I could find a way to put a good piece of glass on it and I would start with something that has a record of absorbing recoil will no ill effects. Nightforce and USO. Especially at 4 bucks every time you pull the trigger.

Re: Hold me over scope?

It's a .338LM, so I am hoping it's not your only rifle.

If this is true, then I suggest you just save for a proper scope for the .338. If you are jonesin' to shoot it, then just pull the scope off of your other rig and rock that.

If you build/acquire new platforms often, then it can be beneficial to have one "placeholder" scope to temporarily place on new rigs. That is the role that my Falcon is in right now.

Re: Hold me over scope?

I'm in your situation exactly with my 338 edge. Eventually it's getting a 5.5-22 NXS but it will be a year or so.

In the meantime I picked up a 16x SuperSniper for $300 and I've been *very* happy with it. If you can deal with the fixed mag it might be a good option for you too.

Re: Hold me over scope?

Very good advice guys and thanks. I am just jonesin' to shoot it and wouldnt mind tossin out 3-5 hundred bucks to hold me over as it would take me probably until feb to buy the nightforce that I want....and to me thats a long time. Good suggestion about buying a placeholder scope. Maybe Ill just buy something that I can swap out between rifles and new builds until I can afford the one I want. Advice and input taken thanks again guys.

Re: Hold me over scope?

It is never a good Idea in my opinion to get a hold me over scope because it always costs more money in the long run and I can't stand not having my rifle exactly the way I want it. I see you want a variable power but if I had to, I would just get the Bushnell 3200 10x Mil/Mil form midway for $199. That saves you on having to pay for the FFP scopes, and least that way you won't be out of too much $$$. I have heard nothing but good things about this scope. When the time is right go all out and get a S&B or Premier. JAA

Same with me. I bought the NF 5.5x22 and rarely use it past 11x except for what you said. Live and learn.

Oh well, I do like the p4f reticle!

Re: Hold me over scope?

I don't think anything is wrong with a hold me over scope. It is not like when you get the better scope you loose the other scope. You can look for something in the for sale section that you can use for half a year and when yiuget your better scope you can put the hold over scope on something else or you can put it back up for sale and get your money back out of it. I purchased a hold over scope (4-14 falcon) while I saved for a premier. Ended up selling the scope once I bought the premier and my total cost for the scope was around 75 dollars after selling it. That 75 was money well spent to shoot my 338 6 moths sooner.
