The wife and I started on some home improvements several weeks ago. A couple days into it and my wife fell 6' off of a ladder shattering her left elbow which was repaired with a steel plate and 8 screws. If this wasn't bad enough on it's own, it also meant that I had to finish everything myself so I've been working like a borrowed mule for the past two weeks trying to get as much done as possible before I go on my annual fishing trip to Ontario this Thursday.

Had a friend help me put in new laminate floors and I installed all new base boards and door casings. I then built two new built it cabinets in the living room and a new fireplace surround. Just finished up the fireplace surround this afternoon and while it's far from perfect, I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. It'll look even better with a coat of fresh paint and a bit of caulk here and there. The surround is built from veneer plywood and the built in cabinets are 3/4" MDF. Thought I'd share a couple of pics:

Actually I'm not convinced it wasn't intentional, lol. Plenty of Percocet and no more work? Sounds like a hell of a deal to me

Re: Home improvements

Nice work. Did some home renovation work for a summer gig a few years back and although it can be back breaking work it sure pays off when you see what you were able to accomplish.

On another note....looks like your helper was sleeping on the job more than once too

Re: Home improvements

Nice work. I like that base detail at the corners. The fireplace surround looks very well executed and works with the dovetail boxes and antique furniture. You're a humble fellow.

Don;t sweat the caulking. I like to say,
"If it aint tight, It aint right."

My painter friends are fond of saying;

A little putty
A little paint
Makes a carpenter
What he aint...

I like to think it's a friendly jab!

I really like the little shelf holding the tv box. Looks great! It's the little details that are cool.

Re: Home improvements

Appreciate the words fella's. I'm starting to get a little more comfortable with the crown molding but I burned a piece or two up getting to that point. Learning finish trim might be the most expensive kind of experience you can get!

That little shelf for the TV box was an afterthought I knocked out last night in about 10 minutes. The box is obviously too long for the mantle and I had to come up with something. It looked horrible just sitting on the mantle and hanging over the edge. That shelf is just sitting there so we can get rid of it should we no longer need the box in the future.
