Has anyone used the berger 80.5gr match fullbore or hornady 80gr a-max rounds? If so, I am curious how accurate these rounds are. would be used for "competition" between friends and possibly varmint hunting. Thanks guys

Re: hornady a-max

I use the 80 AMAX for .223 with an 8 twist. My .223 (@2775fps) will shoot flatter/less wind than standard .308 175 SMK's (@2675).

Honestly there is no way to quantify a bullets 'accuracy'. One might argue statistical quality of how they are produced (consistency). Most bullets are capable of more accuracy than the shooter.

For loads etc, go to the Reloading section and spend some time.

Re: hornady a-max

I have shot the 80gr AMax vs the 77gr SMK - same rifle, worked up load for both, same wind conditions (5mph, gusts to 10mph) at same range (600yds). 18" Noveske 1:7 twist barrel. The AMaxs offered a huge accuracy advantage at 600 yds, easily sub MOA, whereas you really had to work at getting the SMKs to shot an MOA. At 100yds, the AMax and the SMK look exactly the same, but at 600, wow, the AMax really shines.

Spot69221 is right on - 80gr AMAX will shoot like a 175gr SMK.

Highly recommended.
