Hunting & Fishing Hornady AMAX for hunting?

I wonder if the seating stem is different on rcbs vs redding?
I think its more based on the seating die not being the competition version. I just loaded my 338lm rounds using my competition seater and the majority were .002 or less. So I have a comp seater on the way for my 260...

Bodywerks,

I had a conversation a couple weeks ago with the gentleman that does reloads for me. He mentioned he had been having some issues with run out when pressing Berger's and A-Max. I think he uses Redding equipment but cannot assure. In any case, he did some deep investigating and determined the stem in his 6.5 die was not fitting the more slender Berger and A- Max bullets correctly, which was causing the run out. He just ordered dies with a stem better suited to the bullet type. PM "Hessian" for more precise info.

Thanks for the info. The vld stem is what I'm using now for my amax bullets. It works great.

75Amax @ ~3200 impact velocity, surprisingly little damage. Pencil in the front of the neck, golf ball sized exit at the base rear neck/shoulder...

another fur friendly performance for the 75Amax from the .22-243 @ 3500 launch speed, ~3200 impact speed.
Pencil entrance behind front shoulder, quarter sized exit

The 75Amax is too much for grey fox though! Might keep a 70gr TSX in the pipe on night calling stands, cuz I hate to blow them to bits for no reason...
Should have a whitetail or two to experiment on again here in the next week or so!

Here are a few does I shot with the 260 using the 140 A-Max. The small one was hit in the upper/spine area @ 278 yds and the other was hit in the eye @ about 460 yards. It was not my intent to go through the eye, but it was a broad side angle shot when the goat was looking back across her shoulder area. Both were DRT.

140 Ajax

Shot this buck at 250 yards it hammered his offside shoulder and he never flinched,he traveled about 80 yards before piling up but it have to say he had women on his mind the whole time. 6.5 cm 140 amax at 2830 about 18 in penetration on a 200# deer.

With my 300wm, 178amax's it's killed 2 antelope (560yds and 620yds) and two mule deer(270yds and 90yds) this year. Caused extreme carnage but impressively dropped them fast. Retention might not be the best, would like to see some jug tests.

I posted these in another match bullet thread but figured I would share here also since its Amax kills.

Just a few I have pictures of on my phone. Never used the smk's but they seem to do some dirty work on critters.

Kurt wow what eye guards, never seen them like that before.

Here's another 6mm 105gr Amax fired at 3000fps MV. Took a cull buck through the shoulders at 400 yards. Bullet was found under the hide on the offside. Deer traveled 30 yards and piled up.

Final weight was 46 grains.

Exit wound from a 208gr AMAX fired from a 300WM @ 2915fps. Looks worse than it is, but still - don't hit bone.

Both me and the wife deer hunted this year with our .243 rifles using 105 AMAX, loaded with 45 grains of H1000.

I shot a deer at 110 yards. It ran about 30 yards and piled up. The bullets passed through both lungs and hit a rib when it exited then lodged in the hide. It retained 42.2 grains of weight. My wife shot her deer at 80 yards. It ran about 125 yards and piled up. The bullet basically had the same path and also lodged in the hide. It retained 16.4 grains of weight. We also shot two hogs with the same load. Mine was shot at 25 yards and it went about 10 feet then dropped. My wife shot her hog at about 100 yards. It went 40 yards and dropped.

The first pic is the entry wound on my deer. The second pic is the exit wound on the same deer.

Our season closed Saturday and we ended it with six deer taken off the hunting lease. All taken with a 178 Amax, five in .308 yardage ranging from 325-576, and one from the 300 Win Mag at 250 yards. 4 out of 6 DRT, one traveled approx. 30 yards and the other somehow managed to run about a 100 before piling up. The one that ran so far was a shocker since the bullet had performed and the top of the heart and both lungs had been taken out by a quartering to shot at 325 yards. These things happen as you all well know, the Amax is one awesome bullet. Another deer was taken in addition to these six by a friend with the new Hornady 178 HPBT at 420 yards DRT.
Chalk up another great season to the Amax!

Good thread! Answers some questions I've had about the Amax bullets. Particularly 178gr out of a .308 at distance!

A nice Red stag with an 162g Amax from 7mm Rem Mag behind the shoulder , they are a reliable thin skinned game taker and fantastically accurate in all my rifles I can't mark them down in any measure.

I used my ruger gunsite scout with 168gr amax to take three deer opening day. They worked flawlessly. All head shots.

Anyone have experience hunting with the Amax at subsonic velocities?

I have very accurate loads for 300 Blackout with the 208, just never shot anything with it. Think they 'might' actually be a better choice than the 220 SMK which I know will not open up at all.
