Hornady HAP bullets

HAP bullets are a HP design but are advertised as target bullets. Will they expand reliably when used as a hunting or self defense bullet?

HAP bullets are for target shooting and are made so the do not expand like a hunting or self defense bullet

The HAP bullets lack the skives in the jacket to help with reliable expansion.

they don't expand much if any at all. Ones I have recovered from water jugs looked almost new from a .40.

No they will not expand when hitting soft material. Use an XTP for those uses. HAP are made for being accurate in action shooting sports or plinking. Think of them as hollow pointed FMJs and use accordingly.

The HAP do expand well when throw into steel though .40 180grn HAP at about 725fps into steel targets.
