I see that I can get the above scope for $650. Is it a viable alternative to a NXS 1-4x24? I am mainly concerned about reliability and usability for 10-300yd shooting.

Now THAT is quite a telling statement....LOL!! I may be sorry I asked about it. The reticle is still interesting though.

I have a Talon. Haven't used it a lot, but seems decently built and the reticle comes in handy. We shot it at 600 yards the other day. Overall I really like it.
Horus as a company....i'd fall into the "they suck!" camp. Bad customer service, bad warranty.

There is a pretty good demand for the Horus reticles in other manufacturer's scopes (i.e. - Nightforce, USO, etc.).
The best advice I can give you is to keep your eye on the NF and stay clear of the Horus products. If you can wait, the Viper PST 1-4x will likely be an excellent, lower-cost option, but you are likely looking at 1Q 2011 before you'll see one available. It all comes down to what your budget is and what the "best" options are for that amount.

As far as the scopes themselves. I've got one old Falcon that I love. I've used it for years with zero problems. Had another old horus (different model not sure what exactly) that had a lens shatter this year while on a 6xc. I have a new Talon and a new Hawk. They are both okay for the price, but with only a one year warranty you are kind of screwed.

I just received a Blackbird yesterday. Very impressive. Reticle is awesome. Glass is very clear.
One year warranty is pathetic. Hope I don't need it. I've only seen one issue on the 8 or so Horus scopes I've had/have. One, maybe six years old (no idea really) that hade some miles on it, had a funky ocular lens, almost appeared as if there were tiny bubbles in the glass. Makes me wonder if it was the same issue that MichaelK had with a lens shattering.
From what I can tell, the new stuff is much improved over the scopes they were putting out a while ago.

I've actually had more issues with my USO scopes than with my Horus scopes. That said, USO has great customer service.

I plan on looking for a slightly used NF 1-4x24 w/ FC-2 reticle and .25 MOA ZS turrets but it will take me awhile to find that I am betting.
I also sent an e-mail asking if they offer EMS/Fire discounts but bet it is only LEO/MIL.
Time will tell but thanks for the advice.

I would suggest that you stick with the NF. The warranty makes the difference for me. For ME, the Horus Reticle is an outstanding piece of equipment and lets me make much quicker shots by simply holding over. It also allows me to make finer wind holds.
I have used both the Talon and the NF 1-4 on AR's. Both of these that I had were excellent pieces of glass. I never had any problems with either, and they both took quite a bit of abuse in the mountains of Afghanistan. BUT, if there would have been a problem, I would feel much better knowing that NF stands behind its products 100%.
