Range Report Horus Vision Recon A-Trag MX Ballistic system

Re: Horus Vision Recon A-Trag MX Ballistic system

This is the first ballistic software I had purchased, so no comparisons on my part.

The program does everything I have needed and is very acurate if all the right info is inputed.

I had an issue with the program locking up my Palm TX, called cust. service went thru some steps and no fix could be done.

I was then advised to send it in, it was back in a week working great, so that was a plus for Horus.

It is expensive and could use updating with more features.

Do some looking into Field Firing Solutions.

Lindy will probablly be here in a bit with good info.

Try stating your needs, this will help the selection.

Thanks much for your reply. If you by the ruggedized unit sold by Horus, the price is around 2k!! I'll be using the unit primarily outside in different weather situations. I just recieved a new Tac-50 (after waiting 7 months) and would like to maximize it's potential.

Re: Horus Vision Recon A-Trag MX Ballistic system

I think Horus software is good but over-priced.

If you really want a TDS Recon or other ruggedized platform to run software, I'd recommend that you buy it on Ebay used.

I run both FFS and Exbal on an HP iPAQ 111. When it rains, I put it in a Ziplock freezer bag.

Both Field Firing Solutions and Exbal are at least the equal of Atrag, and much less expensive. FFS has a feature set unmatched by any ballistic program, although it's oriented toward military snipers.

Lindy: Thank you for your input. I'm not 100% sold on the Recon. I thought the system was kind of pricey too. I had looked at the iPAQ also.
Unfortunately, I'm not that computer educated to make am objective distinction about which software is better. Hell I remember when computers were as big as a 10x20 room...univac, Yep I'm old.

Re: Horus Vision Recon A-Trag MX Ballistic system

The first computer I programmed, in 1966, was an IBM 1620. I'm pretty old myself.

You may safely assume any of those programs will correctly model air density and calculate basic ballistics, with some minor modifications to compensate for things we cannot measure very well. See:

Sources of Ballistic Program Inaccuracies

With the ability to accept firing position and target position designation from GPS, maps, and coupled laser rangefinders, among other capabilities, FFS has a feature set I want.

Exbal is simpler to learn and less expensive, especially if you just want to run the handheld version.
