Given the temperature most suppressors reach, I think your ears would be a better gauge of suppression.
Not to mention the more mass the suppressor has the more energy it could absorb before it reached a given temperature, doesn't necessarily mean it's a worse suppressor, just a heavier one.

You do come up with the oddest questions!
The answer is no, it is not a means to measure the relative efficiency of the suppressor. There is a lot to this question, but lets just leave it that the perceived heat on the exterior of the can is dependent on a good number of variable in both design, construction, mode of fire, ammunition, barrel length, etc., etc.
Need to measure efficiency? Three things PEAK, DURATION and FREQUENCY.

All I know is my AAC Cyclone 2 gets hot as hell in just a few short rounds.

Toddacguy and myself did some thermal imaging testing on several cans....the thermal camera reported EXACT temps within a bracketed pre-set temp range....
what we found was.....
some cans are pure shit (read loud)
while others exibited severe hotspots that came on very quickly to spike to a very high temp....(read it don't distribute the hot gasses very well.
others spread the heat nicely to all the cones and peaked to a much lower temp.
every fucking one make a suppressor...its like cooking pasta...throw it up on the wall ....and if it sticks.....you go with it.
we like one can that we found is superior by design....& we shoot 'em a lot.....don't start pm'ing me...just go and get a shark.
