Ill be PCSing to Ft Drum in the Sept/Oct time frame. I was wondering if anyone can point me in areas I may want to live or areas to stay out of. Also any good ranges in the area to join or shoot for free would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Housing around Ft Drum

Joey is pretty much dead on, I used to go up there all the time before moving across the country and I agree with him. The last time I was on base there was an insane amount of new construction going on. I remember the days of staying in the old WWII temp. barracks that they've pretty much torn completely down by now.

I don't know about civilian ranges in the area but last I knew you could use ranges on base that weren't being used for training provided that you cleared it with range control.

Hope you like the cold, if not, you are going to be hating life come January time frame lol.

Re: Housing around Ft Drum

My brother has a house in Jay,New York and is about 12 miles outside of Lake Placid. Entire area is absolutely beautiful. Saranac Lake is also really nice. Lots of activities.

Winter is a cold bitch though. Summer is nice, but the biting flies are big enough to have "N" numbers on them!!!

Re: Housing around Ft Drum

Same with the mosquitoes, holy fuck did I want to go insane from them last summer, they seemed to thrive off of the bug spray and citrinela. When I was up there for drill last July at the ranges I don't think I slept for more than an hour a night because of them damn bugs.

Re: Housing around Ft Drum

Make sure you have a snow shovel!!

Seriously, the summers up there are pretty nice but make sure you are prepared for the winter.

I went to sleep one night and woke up the next day with almost 4 feet of snow to shovel before PT.

The farther south you live (i.e. between Watertown and Syracuse) the worse it is. There is an area called the Tug Hill plateau that gets nailed every winter.

Re: Housing around Ft Drum

Carthage has some houses for sale but many are older and in need of updating. The former contract housing sucks ass(Tamarack/Emjay). Sackett's HArbor is nice and a little more expensive. If you do not mind travelling farther Theresa is good, and farther out 3 toward Star LAke isn't bad.
Look hard at the 15 minute to 20 minute 'travel ring'

Things you WANT to do:

Buy a Snow blower
Buy snow tires(I have new wheels with a half season for a Neon/Caliber/PT/any 4.5 x 5 lug pattern to sell to anyone who needs them)
BUY your house. You will be there for at least seven years, long enough for the military BAH to pay your house note. Unless you plan on being there that long renting is a waste of money for long term assignment.
STay out of the crappy parts of Watertown, but a few of the streets off of State strett(They have state names) have decent houses. Go to the other side of town for the really nice stuff, but be ready to pay 200k+. Copenhagen is good and is within the 15 minute drive ring. Black River is right on the edge of post, as is Great Bend. Out the other side of base are a few communities as well out by the race track(vant remember teh name right now).
The place sucks, it's boring(unless you hunt and fish) and SYracuse is 77 miles south for a good time. You will probably be too busy prepping for deployment, deploying, refitting from deployment, prepping for deployment..ad infinitum to get anything done anyway.
They got good beer and the Class VI is the best in the Army. This is no BS. Drum has a Top Shelf Class VI. That has to be the best thing about the place

Oh, if you like to ski, Turin is good, south on 12 by Snowridge, but buy a snow blower because shovels suck

</div></div>No coincidence here. The PX, Commissary and Class VI are actually really nice after they finished the renovations. Watertown sucks, the mall is full of guys that use ACUs to get pussy, never works. Syracuse, Oswego, and Canada are the places to go for a break from the Army. If you are 11B/C, 13F (combat arms), do what you can when inprocessing, do whatever you can to be assigned to 2BCT 2/14 Inf. Amazing unit, actual leaders, and hold the reputation of squared away. Disregard previous statement if referring to Echo 2/14. Alpha and Bravo are the best line units. Golden Dragons!

Re: Housing around Ft Drum

Pray you do not get assigned to DSTB. Sell your left nut to get one of the line units. Unless of course you like a unit that is run by POGs, meant to stand alone, calls for assistance from line doggies to fill positions for deployment because it doesn't run autonomous, and love to cut grass, pick up trash or hang about with nothing to do.
Of course you could request the GArrison SUpport unit and really POG out your tour hanging about with nothing to do but earn your Mountain Tab ROFLMMFAO!

I will say this though, the Class VI here has a few brews and it is CHEAPER than Drum. Good thing I can still get there, but the local shops have so much more here!

RULES for DRUM:

Stay away from ANY auto dealership unless you like getting screwed, Dealmaker is the worst. If you like paying out the ass go to the Carthage Ford dealer. If you want to ride Harleys, go to Syracuse or Utica, Iron Block sucks major ass

Whatever condition your vehicle is in, take it IMMEDIETely TO zIEBART FOR rust protection AND undercoating

That's where all the officers and pogs are. Just so you're ahead of the game, and to make Switch mad for ruining his joke. Earning your mountain tab means fucking a fat(huge) chick. Don't worry, there are PLENTY of them in Watertown. Don't buy a new car, it will be ruined by salt/snow after the first winter. If you do go to the field, even for one night in the non-snow covered days, especially an OP range, bring bug spray. You may think you can tough them out, but like all, you can't. They are vicious.

Re: Housing around Ft Drum

Lived in Carthage and Great Bend, but only in apartments. Joined Great Bend Fire Dept out of boredom and ended up with my second career.

And I married a Watertown girl. Years later she's still happy with me for rescuing her from that place.

Re: Housing around Ft Drum

Thanks for the input I am looking forward to getting up there and leaving Ft Lewis behind. Yes I actually reenlisted to come there. As of right now I am slated for 2BCT. I am hoping to go to 2-14. I had been looking at the 2BCT webpage and decided I wanted to go to 2-14. So hopefully Ill end up there since you say its a good unit Talkingbush.

Re: Housing around Ft Drum

RdgS i lived up there for about 15 years when I was younger. The winters and the bugs are no joke. It snowed around mothers day this year. The funny part is,nobody was surprised. 20 below is not uncommon at a place called stillwater res.(about 20 miles away) When someone says getting 1 to 2 in snowfall, think feet.
The hunting and fishing are great. Black river has good norhtern pike.
Good luck!
