By far the most consequential single Saudi arms purchase was not from the Balkans, however, but from the United States. It was the December 2013 U.S. sale of 15,000 TOW anti-tank missiles to the Saudis at a cost of about $1 billion—the result of Obama’s decision earlier that year to reverse his ban on lethal assistance to anti-Assad armed groups. The Saudis had agreed, moreover, that those anti-tank missiles would be doled out to Syrian groups only at U.S. discretion. The TOW missiles began to arrive in Syria in 2014 and soon had a major impact on the military balance.

This flood of weapons into Syria, along with the entry of 20,000 foreign fighters into the country—primarily through Turkey—largely defined the nature of the conflict. These armaments helped make al Qaeda’s Syrian franchise, al Nusra Front (now renamed Tahrir al-Sham or Levant Liberation Organization) and its close allies by far the most powerful anti-Assad forces in Syria—and gave rise to the Islamic State.

By late 2012, it became clear to U.S. officials that the largest share of the arms that began flowing into Syria early in the year were going to the rapidly growing al Qaeda presence in the country. In October 2012, U.S. officials acknowledged off the record for the first time to the New York Times that “most” of the arms that had been shipped to armed opposition groups in Syria with U.S. logistical assistance during the previous year had gone to “hardline Islamic jihadists”— obviously meaning al Qaeda’s Syrian franchise, al Nusra.

    Hi,

Yea but the current Administration is selling 8+ Billion dollars of defense equipment to Saudi...Trust me it is not just an Odumba thing. It has been going on for years.

    Sincerely,

perhaps, but the trump team is not knowingly arming terrorists we are at war with.

    that is TREASON.

sure the Kingdom might be sharing those arms with unsavory groups, but we don't control that.

    Hi,

Actually under FMS and ITAR regulations we DO indeed control that!! It is a legal stipulation in the approval process to begin with.
No product can be re-exported without prior written approval from the DDTC (ITAR) and US Congress (FMS).
So either we are letting them break Federal laws as we turn a blind eye or we are not punishing them enough for breaking said laws...

    Sincerely,

this is far from the CIA arming and training terrorists as was done under Obama. not even close.

Once C.I.A.-trained fighters crossed into Syria, C.I.A. officers had difficulty controlling them. The fact that some of their C.I.A. weapons ended up with Nusra Front fighters — and that some of the rebels joined the group — confirmed the fears of many in the Obama administration when the program began.

    Hi,

And Eisenhower, Kennedy, Carter, Reagan, Bush x2, Clintons, etc etc....
Be hard pressed to find a President in modern era that has not armed a group that turns to be their enemy or the next Presidents enemy....it is the game that is played by every single Politician....
For example----Do we really have a reason for Politicians to attend the international defense exhibitions as they do? Last week Ukraine, 2 weeks Bahrain, etc etc

    Sincerely,

you can make excuses for Obama and other globalists like Bush and Clinton all you want. maybe you just like him?
unlike you, i don't use past sins as an excuse for more, especially when our troops are the victims.

    Hi,

So are you seriously under the impression that Odumba was the only President to do such?

I have direct knowledge/experience in this EXACT matter since the Clinton days to the current President (Made a career out of it, lol)....open your eyes and you will be amazed at the depth of Political corruption.

    Sincerely,
    Theis

That is just a small part of the arms for Jihadis and as said paid by the Sauds , US did spend bunch of taxpayers money to arm these jihadis as well. Irony now is that these jihadis are now marching under Turk proxy fighting the Kurds.
Same schemes are in play in Yemen ,US supplied arms are being supplied to ISIS and Al-qaeda .

Clinton was also a piece of shit. so was Bush.
so now you think it is ok for Obama to arm terrorists our soldiers are fighting because clinton or bush was an asshole too?
    really? gfy.

Isn't it pretty much all just a game in the end where war on all levels is huge business and has been for thousands of years and nobody is going to last long getting in the way of the military industrial complex?

    very true

but today's news is about how Obama's ISIS might come back because Trump doesn't want more American lives wasted.
i believe this makes what Obama, Clinton, McCain, Kerry and Brennan did much more relevant than past mistakes.

Question is why even build tanks anymore the TOW Missiles made them obsolete on a battlefield . How do they talk men into operating these steel death traps anymore ?

From WW II forward, war material/tools an concept of same, has been a cash cow for many. Those who can transform a better battlefield mouse trap live higher on the hog. Plus some little known mouse traps, are not for general issue but highly paid private boots, no matter their rags flag,...

Saudi arms sales are mostly about buying favor in US politics ,the arms bought for the terrorists are mostly not US made (TOW being the exception) but east block surplus or new made clones of Russian arms.

LOL! they spent over $1 billion to arm and train 4-5 freedom fighters? HAHAHAHA!
I think at the time it was a 500mio$ program

Many 'graduates' of the program simply turned coat or dissapeared all together ,which is kinda recurring theme of US trained foreign fighters ,armies .....etc.

So kind of like how all the weapons we sent over to "Afghan freedom fighters" and our "best buddy Osama" under Reagan kind of went down the drain or went to the wrong folks when Bush I and Clinton and everybody wanted that "freedom dividend" and just up sticks and said nice knowing you after we helped the Afghans kick the soviets asses?

The Syrian war was a mess from the start, pretty much mostly lies and propaganda designed to justify a half baked, half assed foreign intervention and arming some of the worst monsters on the planet to do some of the most despicable things because we wanted to kick out a not too bad dictator (by regional standards) so that our "friends" could put in a puppet government for their own ends.

    kind of, but not really
reagan armed the enemy of our enemy (at the time). the weapons left over became a problem after that conflict.
Obama, McStain, Clinton, Kerry and Brennan armed our terrorist enemies directly, and they were getting paid (millions into the foundation by KSA and the UK) because British Petroleum and the Kingdom wanted to run a natural gas pipeline through Syria.
Turkey was onboard because they would get transport fees for gas flowing through syria and turkey into eastern europe.
of course, it is no surprise that russia didn't want new competition for their only source of export income, besides vodka and those funny fur hats.

    follow the money...
does anyone think the Kingdom was interested in women's rights or AIDS in Africa? lol
obviously the currupt unranians were buying clinton big time while we were giving them billions.
no wonder so much of that money went missing (Burisma) with no accountability.
burisma, or part of it, supposedly "lost" $1.8 billion. they can't show where it went.
that is the company the prosecutor was investigating when Biden got him fired.

my understanding (however reliable that might be) is that the new regime in the Kingdom (under the prince) says they will stop funding wahhabi terrorists, so unless somebody else steps in to fund them, i don't see them growing again.
of course it might be foolish to trust the saudis no matter what they say, but the main backer in the royal family for the terrorists died in a "tragic" helicopter crash, on the anniversary of Trump's election no less. just coincidence.
