My kids and I are learning practical long-range rifle together. Just a casual, fun-with-dad basic skill set.

We're already pretty experienced shooters, and the kids have good familiarity with windage and elevation corrections to 550 yards (local steel silhouette matches).

We want to lairn mil-dot ranging. We got some FFP mil/mil scopes. We're metrically challenged, but we understand feet and yards quite well.

So, how big is stuff?

When you estimate the size of an object for the purpose of mil/dot ranging, do you estimate it's size in yards or fractions thereof, or is there some other commonly used trick?

Does anyone have a relevant pdf or link or database they'd like to share (sizes of various common objects on earth)?

Stuff like small and large game animals, small car, big car, semi trailer lengths, small windows, big windows, doors, car windows, house heights, common bldg heights, airplanes, typical tree heights, traffic lights, street lights, billboards, common fence post spreads, etc etc.

The more the merrier.

Not because we're psychos. :D

Rather, because having a good understanding of basic underlying information and knowledge is part of learning the basics of a craft.

As a parting example, my kids have a small amount of experience in 3-gun and uspsa. Also piano, saxophone, guitar, welding, auto mechanics, good manners, skiing, snowboarding, and yhec. We didn't specialize in 3-gun, and we won't be specializing in lr rifle, but we do want the full picture.

Link, email, IM, or fax.

Thx!

The impact data books have a size chart if you want to keep a data book as well.

And some people use yards/meters and some use inches/cm. I personally use inches of target but I'm studying to memorize the decimels of a yard.

It takes practice to do it right andI am weary of it on game at longer ranges as I try it all the time and have a 50/50% chance of hitting an animal past 400ish yards in the vitals. Ranged one last night in the dark through NV and was 35 yds off. THings about animals is theyre not all the same size. You will learn that objects being turned an such will give you problems.

Glad to see you and your kids doing this. I think its awesome. Good luck and keep us updated.

Thanks!

FWIW, it would be an extremely rare occurrence for us to take a shot on a game animal past 200 yards. Not worth it when you can find closer animals. Also, we do a lot of bowhunting.

I outfitted for years in WY, and can vouch from personal experience that LR hunters injure and lose many animals. I have heard all the talk, and have many many times walked that walk.

I checked the thread linked above, good info, but some of the links are gone because it's a 2008 thread. Any others? Again, just looking for resources. Thx!
