How come most .308's I see are 4+1 capacity...?

I was looking to build me a cheap rifle to supplement my Sako. This rifle would be used and abused. Anyways while I was looking around all I am finding are rifles with 4+1 capacity. What is the deal with that? All of my other .308's have at least 10 round capacity.

Many run a internal box magazine that is flush with the bottom metal, not much room. Even a external 5 round mag will protrude below the bottom metal, a 10 round much more. I don't know of many bolt guns factory or aftermarket (which I assume we are discussing considering the forum) that hold more than 10 rounds.

I guess it boils down to what rifles you are looking at and whether or not you are willing to install some sort of DBM setup for use with larger capacity (more than 4-5 rounds) magazines.

You won't find many factory production bolt action rifles with anywhere near a 10-round capacity. In fact, the only one that comes to mind off hand would be the Ruger/Gunsite Scout rifles which come with 10-round mags.

Production being defined as your average Remington, Savage, Ruger, etc. hunting rifle bolt action...not to include rifles like the Sako TRGs, AIs, etc. which have a bit more of a specialized goal/purpose in mind.

Savage's FCP-SR is one of the few I see with a 10 rd. DBM in 308. Most others do have flush magazines.

The majority of customers for off the shelf bolt action rifles are buying them for hunting. Most states have laws that restrict the amount of ammunition that they can have in a rifle magazine to 5 rounds. That could also be a reason

Yes, basically. I mean it seems like all of the Remmy's, Savage's etc. are all like 5 round capacity while you have rifles like Sako's that are 10 round. Why the difference? I mean I understand that stocks vary in size and there might be limitations in some things but seems to me like you might want to offer a 10 rounder. Why is the magical number 5 lol. It may be a stupid question but I was curious.

I see. I was just curious because I am pretty sure my buddies AI holds 10 and I know my Sako does as well.

Ah, I see. I did not know that. That could very well be why the magic number is 5.

Sako's hunting rifles have 4-6 round magazines (depending on caliber)
