How far apart in general are the nodes...

Re: How far apart in general are the nodes...

Thats a pretty complex question and im not sure if there is a deffinative answer out there for you.

But consider this a TAG for this thread just incase someone else chimes in with a proper response

Re: How far apart in general are the nodes...

I don't think so. And it hardly matters really, it is what it is on a load by load basis. ??

Re: How far apart in general are the nodes...

I normally find two that I pay any attention to...

The first one is about two thirds the way up the test parameters, and indicates to me that the one I'm looking for is close at hand.

The one I want is usually just shy of what QL calced as a max charge for my case capacity....

Google up Optimal Barrel Time

From this OBT theory one can plot the accuracy nodes of different calibers and barrel lengths.

In the case of the 308, there should be 4-5 accuracy nodes from min Varget load to max Varget load. I remember the low node being 43.6 and I shoot primarily at the high node of 47.8 {155 Scenar}. If I remember correctly (and do't just go out and use this data) There are other accuracy nodes at/near 46.6-ish and 45.8-ish. There should have been an accuracy node in the mid-44s, but I never found it.

Re: How far apart in general are the nodes...

You have a max high and low end accuracy node. In a .308 with either RL15 or Varget there is about 3.7gr between the ends. Within these extremes you will see the waves/nodes/thingies/whatever fluctuate in about 0.5gr patterns. Which cracks me up when I see guys doing load development in 0.5 gr increments. If you don't get lucky, you're just stabbing at shit. Which is why it takes some guys 6 months to find a load for a rifle.

Re: How far apart in general are the nodes...

Take it out to 600 yards or what ever range your reloading for and see how they pop then.

Thats how to find the good node you want

Re: How far apart in general are the nodes...

In my experience, if you have found a true node, a 3% change in charge weight(up or down) will bring you close to or even into the next node. You will have to determine this for yourself and your own equipment, however.

The longest range that I have access to is 300yds. Is it safe to assume that the higher powder node would produce a more accurate group for longer ranges.
