Hi. Ive been offered a lightly used R700 Police .308 (with a riflebasix trigger fitted) from a friend for half its retail price here in the UK. I quite fancy it to go along with my TRG. What type of accuracy can i expect using good handloads? and is there anything i need to do to get it running right? Dale

I would get it. When the barrel goes I would get old of Border Barrels over there and get it refitted with one from them and them you will be good to go.

They can be tuned for even better accuracy by squaring the action, lapping the lugs, recrowning the muzzle and setting barrel back one thread and rechamber to tighter chamber.

If you set the barrel back, you'll probably want to go more than one thread. The throats are long.

Here's what mine did, it was factory other than a home bedding job. It's just a little better now that SAS has cut the barrel to 20" and put a good crown and muzzle brake on it. Five 5 round groups at 100 yards.

I agree. Settting it back 1 thread will move the chamber back .0625". My SPS-V, as new, would take 2.925" long ammo to be touching the lands, so the throat is .120" too long to have 2.810" long ammo and only be .010" from the rifling. The SPS-V share the same barreled action with different finish.

Re: How good is a R700 Police

I love my 700 LTR, it is the Rem. 700P with a 20 inch fluted barrel. With Hornady 168gr. Match I get consistent 1/2 inch 5 shot groups off my bipod at 100 yards. When I use sandbags it is not unusual to get .3 inch groups with the Hornady. My rifle is still out of the box with nothing done to it. Im about to start handloading and am looking to make a load to beat the accuracy im already getting.

Re: How good is a R700 Police

IDK, I think I've spoiled myself rotten with customs. I saw a remmy 700p in 338 Lapua today and I just got the impression that it felt very cheap. I wasnt impressed with the DBM system on it the finish was crappy the brake wasnt well finished. So IDK some may like the factory stuff fine but I was not impressed one bit but like I said I think I've spoiled myself with customs.

Re: How good is a R700 Police

I'm in the same boat. I'm shooting my LTR (again the 700P with a 20" fluted rather than a 26" barrel) and using Hornady TAP 168 A-MAX (I'm not sure how the TAP and Match bullets differ from one another, if at all) and getting under .5 MOA at 200 yards (4 shots @ .933" - one group the other day would have been even better but for a pull of the trigger rather than a squeeze) and I've done nothing but make a stock change (there wasn't any issue with the standard stock that came with it, a fine HS Precision, but I much prefer thumbhole stocks; that said, I bought the exact same line of HS Precision as the standard stock, only with a thumbhole design and adjustable LOP and cheekpiece).

It is a fine rifle. People talk about tolerances this and custom that, but the results I have seen from my off the shelf rifle are very impressive.

Re: How good is a R700 Police

I agree, I want to get the McCillan A5 stock, but im not really wanting to wait 6 months to get it. Anyone know where to get one without the wait?

Well said.
