I'm working up a load for a Rem 700 R5. I measured the chamber to be 2.926 to the lands. Mag length is 2.810. When I compare a projectile to the dummy round I assembled to touch the lands I only have .15 of the case mouth holding the projectile...

Is that enough?

I'm working this load up for F-Class T/R so going over mag length isn't an issue as long as it's safe.

You don't need to jam the bullet into the lands to get good accuracy, you will definitely gain some case capacity. Most bullets don't mind the "jump" to the lands, you just need to find the sweet spot, and there is often more than one. </div></div>

Re: How long is "to" long

That seems REALLY long for a .308. Especially for an SMK. Good news though, The SMK's like a little jump, I ran mine .010 off the lands. This will help you get your bullets down into the neck more. This still seems like a pretty long OAL. I'm with The AKD, are you sure you are using the gauge right?

Re: How long is "to" long

BigJohn, IF this is a remington 5R I think the numbers are similar to mine. The COAL with 168gr Sierra CC was 2.950. Measured at ogive it was 2.397-2.400. My loaded rounds are around 2.373" measured at the ogive and shot well.

Re: How long is "to" long

It is a 5R. I measured it several times using the cleaning rod method Tresmon talks about. the ogive measurement is 2.215, so compaired to turbohardtop's it's a bit shorter then his. Guess i'll try some out. It just seams really far out.

That's what I use for my .300 Win Mag 700r5,. Your gonna need the basic set of collets & modified case,.. It should all be in the same area if you buy it off the shelf at your local shop.

I seat all of my SMK's .010 off the lands and I've always gotten good results too.

Re: How long is "to" long

+1 on the oal gauge.. well worth the dough. My measurement to the lands is 2.95
I am jumping .010 as my oal is 2.85. This seems to be what mine likes.
