Its a dumb move. Its why Putin threatens nukes because he can't directly threaten us or a NATO country--especially now that his armed force have proved lackluster. In a last desperate gamble he might, but while he has any ounce of sanity left, its a losing move.
He might try and pick off a lesser ally like a Baltic or Finland, but with his hands full in Ukraine, he's backed into a corner--that's the real danger. Let him flap his mouth and threaten all he wants. He still might do something stupid as a final death throw like nuke the dardenelles or Kiev. But right now his hand has been played.

The vast majority of the US population will likely survive an initial strike. But most will succumb in the following weeks and months due to the lack of electricity and everything that depends upon it. No large-scale agriculture, no transportation, no communications, no health care, just an instant trip back to the 19th century and all the pain and suffering that would follow. I'd be shocked if 1 in 10 Americans survive the first year, and those that don't make it will spend their final days wishing they had died in a fiery blast.

Good observation. That's definitely a factor for some people. Ingesting a "flea" would be an unpleasant way to go, particularly in the absence of modern medical care. And without functioning telecommunications, people won't even be aware that a disaster has occurred, and wouldn't know where to go. And even that information wouldn't be helpful, since there won't be any functioning transportation available.
My bet is still that a lot more people will die from dysentery, untreated diabetes, open fractures, etc.
On the bright side, nobody will have to pay property taxes anymore.
I thought living in New Jersey was kinda like living in an epic nuclear hellfire death.
The saddest part is for everyone that does survive, property tax and taxes in general will be the first GD things that go back to normal.
