Re: How much deviation in SMK bullets?

NJ,

Unless the weight is off by a couple of grains or more, weight is fairly irrelevant. OGL measurements will lead to better loads and give better info. It's luck of the draw on a box of 500, I've purchased some boxes with a +/- 0.005" OGL and BOL, and a whole lot more with +/- 0.025" variance. Especially with different lots.

It's one way to show how good SMK bullets are. Some like to know these things, and better yet see it.

To be honest with you out of all of the SMK's i have looked at they seem to be the most consistent.

I have found the lapua scenars ive been using recently to be pretty bad with big variations.

That's odd...

Using labratory grade instruments, I found just the opposite. My results for factory made projectiles were:
Berger, anything
Lapua Scenars
Hornady Amax
Nosler Competition
Sierra Match Kings

While I am not going to post the data I have recorded on all the different bullets I have inspected, I have it saved and filed on hard copy. I tested 3%. That's the same number as DOD and DOE use to inspect off the shelf hardware.

Custom made bullets are in a different category, and ALMOST ALL are better than the factory bullets. But that's what you pay for.
