Gunsmithing how much weight will i save?

i have a remington 700 sps varmint. i have the factory barrel on it which is 26" long. anyone know how much weight i would save if i had it cut down to 20"?

im thinking it will make it much more usable for what i will be doing. its mainly a hunting rifle and its a tad heavy and long as it sits right now for my liking.

maybe 6-8 oz. and 80 fps.

If its a .308win Id guess you'll lose 100fps in 6".
If its a .243 you'll lose a little more.

And 8oz or so that are in THE BEST place to lose 8oz or so. It will feel like the rifle is a pound lighter.

Silk purses should not be converted into sow's ears.

If you have a varmint rifle, cutting down the barrel will never produce anything but a compromise.

There are a fair number of purpose-specific hunting rifles that don't cost an arm and a leg, and they are actually very good for their intended purpose; probably much better than any amputee compromise.

Me, I'd buy one, and leave the varmint rifle as it is.

i wouldnt really call this gun a varmint rifle. yes thats the model name, but it just comes with the heavy barrel. this is chambered in .308 and im never gonna use it on varmints, i have an AR for that.

i figured cutting the barrel down would save some weight where i needed it and make it easier to move through the brush and get in and out of a deer blind. would losing 100 fps be worth it?

how much would something like this cost?

I cut mine down. Was a great idea. 26" is too long for me. I'll give up the 100-140fps no matter what cartridge it is. 140fps doesnt mean as much to you as knowing what the hell is going on around you. And the 243 with 107s or any .264 with the 130 class or above bullet will outperform just about any 308win load. I use a 243 with a 22" barrel. Ya I lost like 100fps in the 4" I gave up, but I dont notice down range. And it still shoots flatter than the 308s, and many others.

But then again, it didnt cost me anything to do.
