How to adjust to shoot through chrono

Drive a stake in the ground directly under the head of the tripod and run 550 cord or bungee up to the tripod from the stake.

Also a good Bogen will let you widen the legs out further. This coupled with the stake it and ain't goin' nowhere.

How many Mils did you have to come up to get the rubber bands to clear the chrono?

Sorry, couldn't resist. </div></div>

It was risky man, I hit the chrono on of them!

I'd say I was an inch above the sensors. Due to no muzzle blast, I could fire 1 foot away from it.

I did get couple ERR 2 though, guess I missed the rear sensor. Hahaha

Lets see how many jackasses who think it's a dumb thread can't resisting commenting on how dumb the dumb thread is.

Can't figure which is worse, the dumb thread itself, or all the jackasses who gotta tell the world wide web how dumb it is.

Really, there's plenty of other even dumber threads around here that better deserve the attention........ </div></div>

Lighten up, Francis.

We're just having some fun. It's good to see some guys are as anal retentive as me when it comes to shooting.

And that takes us to 54 posts...we're halfway there!!!

Re: How to adjust to shoot through chrono

Hmmm, and to think I just eyeball alongside the barrel to see if I am going to be able to miss it 10 feet away. Sorta like with a handgun, 'course it was with a handgun that I managed to remove one of the sunscreen supports. Amazing how hard those little rods are to find afterwards, and how much of a kink a .357 will put in it.

Just doing my part to reach the 100 posts mark.

I'm just having fun too, albeit exclusively at your expense.

He who whines about how many posts a thread has, or how dumb he think it may be....is the one who needs to lighten up a tad.

And, my name ain't fucking Francis...........

Except that you can't sight along the barrel unless the barrel is between you and the chrono, which means you're behind it. So you're not 10 feet away, you're closer to 13.

The typical chrono's "sweet spot" is 4" above the sensor and it won't read a shot that's 4" higher than that. Four inches at 13 feet is 92 MoA, which is a degree and a half (1.54°). At that distance, the chrono's sweet spot is about one degree wide (1°). That means if your eyeballs are off by one half of a one degree (0.5°), either you get no reading at all or you blow hell out of your chrono.

So I'm guessing you either don't own a chrono or you have a sizable stockpile of used chrono components.

Re: How to adjust to shoot through chrono

Fred, I am a very meticulous handloader and yet I still seem to get fairly wide extreme spreads in fps.

Could this be caused by the fact that I'm not shooting in exactly the same place over the Chrono every time?

Will a small variation make that much of a difference or is it an all or none proposition? In other words, it either reads correctly or does not read at all.

BTW...funny post. I liked that.

Re: How to adjust to shoot through chrono

I'm not sure why this is being labeled by some posters as a "stupid thread" because I have just gotten my Shooting Chrony (with its bizarre 24-page <span style="text-decoration: line-through">useless</span> user manual and am concerned about setting it up with the kooky wobbly screens and those hinky rods. I'd hate to shoot the works, so this thread's been a help.

</div></div> i dont think small changes would account for a large ES , if the weather was bad maybe...i would probably look elsewhere , powder primer , to solve your ES problem ,How big is your ES ?

Re: How to adjust to shoot through chrono

himaster, there is one shortest path across chrono, and that's where it potentially is the most accurate. However, I think you have to have some pretty noticeable -- I'd even say gross -- alignment errors for it to affect your reading even by a couple of fps.

Here's what Bryan Litz wrote about chrono errors in an older post:

"[T]here's a lot of error that comes from how consistently those sensors trigger. Poor light conditions and long pointy bullets will challenge the consistency of those sensors...."

"...I also suspect that chronographs can be very affected by the life in the battery. They'll continue to 'work', with a higher failure rate and more erratic velocities all the way till the battery's dead; but I *think* they work much better (more reliable and accurate) with fresh new batteries. Take this with a grain of salt because it's based on very few data points."

I do own a chrono and I have no used parts other than those in the original setup (with one slightly bent sunscreen support from the afore-mentioned .357).

Maybe I'm not thinking about this enough, but if the chrono is between me and the target, and I have the target centered, it's pretty easy to put the round where I want it. I'm not estimating 0.5 degrees with no reference. Yes, I have to walk back and forth several times during setup, and I check with the scope on low power, but if I see a support rod on each side and I know the straight line between the bore and the target is above the pricey parts, it seems to work. Based on readings with the same load on different days, it seems to be pretty uniform, too.

I am shooting off a bench, so my support point doesn't move vertically, and the target is fixed, so once I am set up my only concern is lateral at my end.

Re: How to adjust to shoot through chrono

Holy crap.

Threads like this must make new Chrono owners run in fear.

Maybe I am just careless, but all I have ever done is setup a target. Sight in the rifle. Pull the bolt. Setup the Chrony on a tripod and set it in at 10' from the muzzle. I sight through the BORE to make sure I am going to clear the unit. If I am not then I adjust the tripod and repeat. At most it takes me five minutes to setup.

I use a bipod and bag for support most of the time. A Rock BR works for rifles that don't have bipod provisions.

I can wave my arm over mine.
Not as fast as a BB gun.
