How to break in a new rifle?

Re: How to break in a new rifle?

Be prepared for the flames mark.

That being said, the general consensus is to clean the shipping grease out of it, and just shoot it. Most barrel break in procedures are bogus.

BM11,
Thanks for the heads up and actually answering my question. I realize it's probably even below being a "newbie" question but hey, it's my first
rifle and I just wanted to get some feedback. Not everyone is a smart ass.

Just shoot the thing. Dont try to group your first 20 shots, just shoot em through to get out burrs and smooth any rough spots.

then shoot with your high end stuff.

Re: How to break in a new rifle?

I found this enlightening, from Schueman Barrels:

>My Personal Practice has become to never clean the bore of my barrels. I do use a brass rod
>to scrape the deposits out of the chamber. But, I've learned to leave the bore alone and it very
>slowly becomes shinier and cleaner all by itself. Years ago I occasionally scrubbed the bore with

I also live in the dry SW, but I wonder if you live in the wet if it would be a good idea to condition the bore with Weaponshield or Eezox.

Re: How to break in a new rifle?

Carbinero, You didn't note that Wil Schuemann makes some of the most accurate 1911 pistol barrels in the world. I have four of them right now. One will shoot 10 shot groups under 3/4" at 50 yards. And no, I don't clean the barrel.

Pistol barrels shoot mainly lead or jacket ammo at a much slower velocity than a rifle. However, I will clean my rifle once in a while after the accuracy degrades. Just seems like the right thing to do.

I did break in my 5R. Will it help, not sure but, I'm pretty no one else will be able to tell me either.
