How to mount a scope on a Savage MarkII F?

Re: How to mount a scope on a Savage MarkII F?

yes these groves are for mounting a scope with the use of 22 style rings. your right, they arent a very solid for mounting a scope compared to weaver or picatiney stlye bases. they work ok if its just a close range hunting gun that doesnt get much abuse.

Ugh... going nuts. I'm pretty sure they are the 3/8 dovetail grooves. Took my rifle and scope to numerous gun stores and apparently it can take dovetail and small weaver rings. Problem is... my Nikon 3-9x is a 50mm objective and even the high rings won't clear it. Can't seem to find anyplace that sells Extra High or Extra Extra high. (That's the size I was told I'd need) Do they even make them?

You could always get some weaver see through rings, they will work but are too high for my liking. Usually run about 25 bucks and they do make them in 3/8

Re: How to mount a scope on a Savage MarkII F?

Is there a difference between 3/8 dovetail and rimfire rings?

It seems my options are to get a ring off the internet, pay a gunsmith $60 to drill/tap before buying base/rings, or buy a base that mounts to it and then rings.

It's obvious that the cheapest route would be to just buy rings, but I'm not even sure which type to order. The Nikon Prostaff 3-9x50mm does have a large objective, and while the .22 bolt action really doesn't have any noticeable recoil... would the rings not move with that scope on it? I'm worried the scope is too heavy.

1. the usual cheap rimfire rings suck, by millet rimfire ones, if your still going to use the grooves, they are the only ones that stayed put on my marlin.

2. BETTER WAY-if you've already spent that much on a scope, pay the gunsmith the $ to drill and tap the receiver, actually, order an egw 20 moa base, (lots of info here on the hide about it)then have him drill and tap it to the dimensions of that base. you wront regret it.

3. WASTING MORE TIME AND MONEY - you can buy an adapter that clamps to the grooves and turns it to a weaver base, but you're still clamping to the grooves which is defeating the purpose.

4. the egw base does give you a little height from the receiver, so may may only need to use low or medium height rings.

i've been through the same thing before, #2 and #4 will save you time, $, and grief.
