I sent my rifle to have a zeiss scope mounted (amongst other upgrades) I asked about buying a base for the scope, but was told that the scope can be mounted directly to the barrel. Is there an advantage/disadvantage to this vs. mounting to a base?

Easy way from CS Tactical

Whew. It makes my head spin a little. What model rifle are we talking?
In general a base will give a more stable mounting platform and for long range shooting an angled base 10-40moa will allow you a greater range of scope adjustment for more distant targets.

WOW!! EPIC FAIL!!!

You'd better provide us with the location of the genius who provided you that pearl of wisdom so that we can nuke them from orbit (only way to be sure)!!

The video link Rob provided is all you should need.

Also...like others have asked...what kind of rifle is it?

Re: How to mount a scope?

I must have misunderstood the vendor. I've done my research on them and they have a good reputation here in this forum. I don't want to let my understanding, to soil anyone's reputation. I did buy a zeiss conquest for my remi 700 tactical. When asked if I need to buy a base, I was told no. Perhaps I misunderstood. I'll contact the seller again.

Re: How to mount a scope?

Talley makes one piece scope rings. Perhaps that is what he was talking about. You don't need a base, the rings attach directly to the rifle. They work fine. Most of us are "tactical" oriented so we use picatinny rails which have some advantages. Then you put rings on the picatinny rails and you are good to go.

EGW makes good picatinny rail for a Rem 700. Then get rings. What diameter tube is your scope?

Re: How to mount a scope?

Thanks for posting that video from a lurking noob. Just to clarify, does locktite go on all the threads or only on the base to rifle screws? I'm guessing it's the former with blue (not red), correct?

Regarding Locktite, use the blue.

Locktite the base-to-receiver screws. Badger recommends applying locktite to the base prior to mounting - keeps moisture from wicking between the base and receiver.

Do not Locktite the ring screws.
