I have a Rock fluted barrel due to arrive in a few weeks.

I've painted a dozen rifles using Dura-Coat and now Gun-Kote.

Would like to paint the flutes a different color than the rest of the barrel.

How do you go about doing this?

Wait a second, you've got the stuff to paint rifles and have never told me? I thought we were friends!!

Re: How to paint a fluted barrel?

I've read that you run tape along the barrel, covering the flutes, then you can follow up by rolling a marble or ball bearing along the flute, but on top the tape.

This cuts the tape where the flute and barrel O.D. meet, and allows the outer portion of the tape to be removed, but keeps the flute covered and masked against the paint.

Re: How to paint a fluted barrel?

i haven't done it but i think this idea would work. first spray the entire barrel the color you want the raised portion of the barrel to be. then wrap the barrel with masking tape. take a ball bearing a bit larger that the flutes are wide and roll it along the flutes. i would think the ball bearing would cleanly cut the masking tape and then you could remove the tape from the flutes so you could spray them.

again, i haven't tried it but think i will if i ever wanted to do a two tone fluted barrel.

Re: How to paint a fluted barrel?

I wouldnt laugh, Im looking for ideas for an oven. Some pics would be nice. This is something Ive wondered about too and although I havent yet done it, my idea would be to spray the flutes and with a good paint remover on a cloth, remove the overspray before it dries.

Re: How to paint a fluted barrel?

I do the barrel in the flute color first and let it dry. Fill the flutes with playdough or clay and spray the final color. Remove the playdough or clay after the second color dries and wipe off the excess clay..

Re: How to paint a fluted barrel?

Start by shooting the whole barrel the color you want the flutes to turn out. Then run masking tape over the whole barrel and use a fine-toothed file against the flute edges to cut the masking tape. Pull the tape on the high side of the barrel and shoot the rest. Pull the rest of the mask off before the topcoat has a chance to set up, and leave it alone for at least a day before messing with it, as the paint will be thin on the edges.

Re: How to paint a fluted barrel?

Do the whole barrel first, flutes and all as this seals the flutes edges and stops any rust starting on the edge. mask off and then cut out the flutes using the marble, it works a treat, nice clean cut.
