How to ship to custom builder?

I am starting my first custom gun and have a question about shipping? I have the action that is attached to the factory barrel, and a custom barrel to ship along. My builder suggested shipping both items in one box through ups. Any suggestions or comments would be helpful.

Re: How to ship to custom builder?

Get a cheap plastic case to ship it in. If you're worried about the new barrel getting loose in the case, wrap it in some bubble wrap. Be sure to include your info in the case. After getting everything reay, I wrap the plastic case with a little packing tape, hten either build a box from scrap cardboard or take it to a packing store (they'll pack it, but wont ship it).

Simple, put all that stuff in a box, drive over to UPS, tell them what it is, chose shipping option, insure it, and that's it. All this if you are shipping to an FFL. UPS is not required to see any FFL copy's. They just need to be told what it is. This doesn't mean you won't run into some hero at UPS that thinks they know more than they actually do, and give you a hard time. The FFL will ship back to you directly when they are done. Best of luck.

Re: How to ship to custom builder?

Post Office take it to the PO to ship it or UPS pick up at my house. Too many UPS workers "know" that UPS does not ship guns even if you print off their info off the web so I no longer want the hassle of taking it in so I pay a little extra and have them picked up at my house. The UPS drivers deliver everything so they know the rules, I have never had a problem doing it this way. I have ammo shipments picked up by UPS also with no problem, remember the ORMD labels.

It is legal to ship the guns by USPS and they do not need to know the contents of the box so there is no problem that way either.

Hope this helps

I'll just add - make sure to insure for full value replacement or, more in the event of a loss and/or damage.

p.s. I've always had excellent service from FedEx - usually ground service (3 day) is very affordable & reliable.

Re: How to ship to custom builder?

i just shipped mine off last week. I took the barreled action and stripped it bare (trigger, bolt stop, bolt, rail, etc..) and wrapped that in bubble wrap and tape. I took the bolt and wrapped it up really well (too good, most likely).

I found a box that some 10/22 parts had come in...and cut some fairly stiff foam and put it in the bottom of the box and tossed in the barreled action. I put some paper around the barrel to keep it centered and give some support. I then put the bolt in, along with some more paper, then put another foam piece in on top of that...and taped it all up.

I took the parts to UPS, told them what it was and gave them the address...and off it went. I had a copy of the FFL on hand, in case, but they never asked.

Brilliant idea...especially if you have to try and collect on an insurance claim.

If you are going to try that kind of stupidity, do not waste the money insuring it as UPS will NEVER pay the claim if you lie about the contents. In order to file a claim, you will be required to provide proof of value.

OP if you are looking for a bombproof way to ship a barrelled action, pick-up a length of 4" PVC pipe, end cap and a screw on end cap. It adds a bunch of weight, but protects well. Just wrap up the barrel and B/A in bubble wrap and make sure they are tight in the tube.

If you are having an assembled rifle shipped back, use an actual gun case.

Re: How to ship to custom builder?

Thanks for all the advice. I will be heading to ups today. Thanks. I will post pictures in 4-6 months of my A.J. Brown custom.

Good Move.

Re: How to ship to custom builder?

Put into a hard case gun box. Then cover it with it cardboard so the box monkeys don't know what it is.

It legal to ship to your gunsmith whatever. If he's an FFl it makes it even easier.
