Gunsmithing How to take off krylon paint from HS stock?

Re: How to take off krylon paint from HS stock?

light careful sanding cant hurt. can it? i was texturing mine so i have been roughing it up. the black pebble finish comes off in a fine dusty powder. might take longer than you want, but sanding will get it off. possibly some of that pait stripper thats citrus based, not the chemical stuff that may eat the fiberglass and its resins, but the newer stuff. worth a look and a test on the inside maybe the barrel channel?

I was hoping to keep the original finish... and just take off the krylon that was put on after(camo paint)...I guess there is no ideal way of doing it and keeping the original finish...

Forget stripping and start thinking repainting. Tape off the recoil pad and the bedding area; remove the sling studs. Scuff the stock with a Scotchbrite pad and then rub down with a tack rag soaked in acetone. Hang the stock by a wire/coat hanger; spray with Krylon Adhesion Promotor; wait ten minutes, follow with a coat of primer (as in a single thin coat). Follow in 10 minutes with a thin coat of Krylon, color of choice, then a second coat 10 minutes later. Set aside to cure for 24 hours; reinstall the studs, remove the tap, and your stock will look factory new. How do you think HSP refinishes their stocks?

i used acetone on mine. worked fine, no ill effects observed.

not a very efficient way of doing it though, acetone evaporates really fast. id try the citistrip or brake cleaner next time

+1 on the acetone works very well
