That's how I was taught, I think Jack Dempsey concurs here, but I'm only half way through the book so far. I was just excited about what a good read it was I went ahead and posted here before I finished it. Love the history aspect of it.

He's complaining in the 1950's that people just don't know how to punch like they did in the good "old" days.

It's great.

You are either gifted or a braeler. I am a brawler,in high school,I spend a lot of time boxing with my brother. Now he was gifted when it came to speed, rythum. He'd land punches two to my one. I often wonder if key secrect was his understanding of music,he could play just about any musical insrument. Twist of the hip and the snap of the wrist......

Re: How to throw a punch

When I trained in Tai Kwon Do based kick boxing and Tai Kwon Do, the strike was aimed as far as you could reach past the target zone. My favorite strike is the one that 'reaches down to Florida and comes flying upwards of New York, and on into Canada as it hits' Whatever, it's good for about 350+psi per strike and that my friends is enough to make a man 'dazed and confused' while the rest of the 'follow ons' strike.

JD was, and has always been 'The Man' for stark as is, no bs boxing strikes. I do have to disagree with him though. Punchers are not born, but made through the rigors of a life of fighting or growing up fighting bullys who are larger.

When in doubt, hit the biggest motherfucker first and don't stop hitting until your friends pull you off

Actually you don't have to disagree with him SB he comes around to this very same point in about the 8th chapter or so.

I like that strategy though I think it's a solid one. Usually the big guy in the buddy group is the one that fuels the courage of the rest.

Re: How to throw a punch

Bare fist bone to bone contact is a no-no. Ends up in sprains, broken bones. We used to beat a 1x6 pine board to toughen up out fists. Bruce Lee was our idol then, anything he did,we'd try. Every day we would run miles. Do shadow boxing too. One day the bad guys brought down this gentleman who was supposed be a Black Belt or something. Fight was on. The Kung Fu guy did his manvers, but damn, My brother was just too fast and they Fu Man had ten years on him. It is imprinted in my mind. Speeds Kills in moe than one way!

He got that from me

Really though, it has always been the best stragedy when facing a group that has malicious intent in their eyes.
Hanging out with SD, BR, Decry, DK's, Black Flag and those other punk band fucks was probably the highlight of my duty time in the Corps down in the LA region as well as my Summers from '78 - '82. Punk Rock was FUN!

If you doing this, your pushing you punches. You are not getting full extension, power, or torque. You'll notice good boxers duck and dip toward a punch. If they get hit (mostly on the gloves or glances to the side of the face) it is never a full power punch.

Re: How to throw a punch

Mac - in the arts you keep your back straight and thrust power out - never dipping or leaning forward - UNLIKE boxing however because you can be pulled off balance.

So it is correct to aim 6" beyond, put some Chi into it and a spirit yell.

Unlike boxing we also only use the larger two knuckles, which doubles the power by reducing the area of the fist that strikes.

I don't punch though, I have 2 times the power, maybe 3 in my legs so a front kick is far more effective than a punch, and if I DO ever punch it's generally a vertical fist to the solar plexus or a back first to the head/temple area.

But I did box in HS and you are correct, if you are boxing or fighting someone you know will not drag you to the ground.
