Just realized I posted this in rifle scope forum, so moved it here

hello all newbie here, CDNN has a Howa 1500 custom varmint Target heavy barrel in .308, 1 to 12 twist, 20" barrel for $399.99.
Is this a good entry level Rifle for 100 to 500 yards. What type of accuracy could I expect with match ammo. Thanks

Re: Howa 1500

That's a good price for the gun, not just an entry level gun either. Out of the box most guns will shoot MOA, the rest is up to the shooter. It all depends on what you want out of the gun.....what are you personally looking to accomplish? There are pleanty of aftermarket parts and gucci gear you can buy for it. Good luck with the purchase...hell at that price I might just buy one.

Re: Howa 1500

Basically just target shooting and maybe the occasional "here piggy, piggy hunting trip" also have a range here that is 1000 yds. Thinking of putting Bushnell 3200 10x on it. Just trying to put together a decent bolt gun w/o breaking the bank.

Re: Howa 1500

I hear ya on that one.....I think you should be good to go with a set up like that. I've personally never been one for a fixed scope, but they are a little less expensive. Invest in a bipod as well if you plan on doing extended range shooting.

Re: Howa 1500

Vortex Viper scopes are very nice for the money . They were closing out certain reticles at a good discount . I have used 6.5-20x50 and 6.5-20x44 and liked both of them . I am sure you will really like your Howa ! Check out my 260 built by aka-spook .

Re: Howa 1500

I just finished duracoating my new Howa 1500 .308 24" barreled action, and waiting for the B&C medalist A2 stock to arrive this coming Monday, then I can put it together and go see how it shoots. A friend of mine have several Howa rifles in multiple calibers and they've all been at least MOA shooters, most of the time better than that.

Go for it, you'll be happy. Be sure to read up on user trigger adjustment and bring down the trigger weight as soon as you get it; very easy to do.

Re: Howa 1500

I just recently put together a Howa 1500 action with a B&C stock (same set up that SoCal Pete mentioned in his post). I have only taken it to the range once but it is a very nice shooting rifle. Groups ranged in size from .41" to right around 1.0" at 100 yds with a variety of factory ammo, and some handloads I had laying around. 399 is a great price, too. I think I paid close to that for just a barreled action once I factor in shipping and local transfer fees.

Re: Howa 1500

I've also considered this rifle. I have a Remington 700 SPS-V in .308. It's making .5 groups at 150 yards with my dad shooting it, mine aren't so tight lol. How will this rifle compare to what I have now in accuracy, will it at least be close in it's stock configuration?

It is hard to say how a specific gun will do, by comparison to another specific gun. I think in general Howa's are a little better made then Remingtons. However you could get the best remington on the production line that day, and the worst howa on the production line that day.
