Just wondering if anyone has experience with Howa. I have read nothing but good things about them. I'm considering the thumbhole varminter but it has a 1 in 12 twist. Any feedback would be great.

Thanks folks,

Tikka

Re: Howa info.

I love mine. I threw a varminter barreled action into a b&c a2 stock. I sent it off to mark@sac, and he bedded and installed a bolt knob.

I'm a so-so shot. But i know this rifle shoots better than I. It also really likes 52gr bthp match ammo too.

This was one of the threads that struck dear and true to me when i was toying with the idea of howa and remington.

Septic-Tank13's post to Arfcom about differences in receiver quality hit the nail on the head for me. 1 piece bolt, m16 extractor, field strippable bolt (and no, fucking your bootlaces up with a remy bolt trying to field strip it doesnt count), integral recoil lug, very tight tolerances, easy to adjust trigger, and steel bottom metal. I was sold. Pulling a barrel is a little tough, but any good gun plumber worth his salt should be able to deal with it, and be able to work with metric threads.

Re: Howa info.

Thanks Alderleet,

I just read that thread. I'm in the same boat. With my pet 7mm-08 I can hold MOA to about 500 yds. from the bench. I figure the 1 in 12 twist of the Howa varminter and lighter bullets will out shoot me at that range from field positions offered while ground hog hunting.

Thanks again,

Re: Howa info.

Well, I bought the Howa in .223 and so far I'm delighted. Took it to the range to sight in and begin the break-in while fire forming some cases. The laser bore sighter put my first shot at 50yds 2"high and about 3" left. Made scope adjustments for windage and went straight to 100yds. While cleaning after each of the first five shots I managed 1.25". This is with new, unfired cases, 27 degrees, a gusty 5-7 mph wind and poor form. The second five shot group, without cleaning between shots ran about the same. About an hour in the cold wind was all I could stand so I packed up. I can't wait to begin working with this one.

Re: Howa info.

cool cool. Im going to pull the barrel on mine and throw a faster 1:8 twist on it.

1:12 isnt cutting it for match ammo selection, since 52gr bthp match is all it slings well.

Re: Howa info.

Howa is nice and it's cheap. I am really considering howa varmint in 223 for my next purchase. Originally I wanted to purchase tikka, but having handled howa, I must admit they look and probably shoot just fine. The price Tikka is charging in Europe for their guns is 30% to high. it's a cheap gun to produce and should be also sold at reasonable price. Howa seems a better choice even if I had to replace the factory trigger. Still I have 150EUR left for ammo.

Re: Howa info.

I Have the Howa Axiom in .308. I'm very pleased with the setup. The Axiom stock takes away the majority of the kick, to make it fill like a 223. Only complaint, is the floor plate, and no magazine, but Jeff with CDI is going to fix that problem.

Update on my new Howa 223 varminter

Because of the promise this rifle showed on it's innitial outing I couldn't wait to give it another try so I braved the elements again this morning. The load I used the other day for fire forming and sighting in was 23.6 gr. of IMR 8208 xbr. This is on the light side but given the groups during fire forming I decided to reload the fired cases with the same charge using the Hornady 52 gr. A-Max BT and rem. primers. The bullet is seated just off the lands. I fired four 5 shot groups after two fouling shots. The largest group was .977 and the smallest was .865 center to center. This is under the same conditions as the first session. I'll start tweeking the load and experimenting next week. By the way: I also shot Rem and Fed factory 55gr. loads and both shot just under an inch as well. Anyway, for anyone out there considering the Howa I hope this helps. I love mine.

Re: Howa info.

I'll probably put on a Pac-Nor or Rock Creek, 5r, 1:8 twist, light palma, chopped at 22.

The barrel profile that comes stock with the varmint action is obscenely heavy. A truck is missing a axle somewhere, because i'm shooting my howa.

It really all depends what direction I take my howa. I've also fiddled around doing a 300BLK with it, because thats the only SAAMI standardized 300-221 wildcat. It really depends where and what i'm doing 6 months down the road.
