Hey everyone. Looking for a little advice on what to do about my rifle. I have a Savage model 10 FCP HS Precision. One thing that I noticed about the rifle is the barrel sits further left in the channel that right. Should I try to move the pillars or call up HS and complain or something? I dont think it has really caused any shooting issues other than it annoys me when I look at it. Any advice would be great, thanks.

Yeah I was looking to glass bed the rifle. And yes, aluminum bedding, not just pillars. Do you think bedding the rifle will even it all up or would you cock the action in there just a little to make it even or just glass bed it as you would any other rifle?

Re: HS Precision Barrel channel off center

Skim bedding will straighten out the rifle just fine if done properly. There are a couple of tricks with tape around the barrel to do a stress free and straight bedding job. Check out the bedding threads around here. There are several with pics including ones with Savages. The main difference is with a Savage you normally float the rear tang.

Yeah Scimitar had an awesome thread about bedding a Savage and I talked to him about floating the rear tang. So you think just doing the old wrap the barrel in electrical tape and surgical tubing the action will give straighten things up?

Re: HS Precision Barrel channel off center

I've never used the surgical tubing but using tape on the barrel works perfectly to center it. Just try to be as even as possible when wrapping the tape on there. I normally use a little bit of tape on the tang to make sure its floated unless I know I'm going to be working out the stock back there. I don't use anything that would apply pressure on the action or barrel when bedding. once its centered, level, where I want it, I just check back every hour or so. I don't think surgical tubing would add a whole lot of stress to it but I just don't use any.

Pretty common, I've seen four Sav LRPV in HS stocks with the barrel channel off center. FWIW, Earnie The Gunsmith has a bedding technique for the Vee block stocks.

Re: HS Precision Barrel channel off center

what I did with mine, not with the exact intent to straighten the barrel channel, but was re-using the stock on a thinner barrel. I bedded the full length of the barrel in the stock, so you could relieve the area around the barrel channel, and then put a couple layers of tape to give you a free float, then bed the whole barrel channel. Best to do this in coordination with bedding the action, but it won't take much more work and will come out nearly perfect. Then a paint job to finish it off!

That's right. I set the stock in a vise, level. I get glue all over the place, then set the barreled action in place. The tape roll on the barrel will center it in the channel. (NOTE: take a visual inspection to make sure the channel is fairly straight, its not a given).

I press the action in a few times by hand to make sure its set and level the way I want it. Devcon will not allow it to move much if any on its own. I check on it several times in the first hour to make sure its where I want it. A little clean up here and there and you have a perfect stress free bedding job.

The test is when you go to install the action with the action screws. If you have a perfect fit, the screws will just stop when the action seats.

Do you use guide screws to make sure the action is all lined up correctly? A quick side question on bedding. A buddy of mine told me not to mess with cleaning it up until about an hour after it is placed into the bedding, he says it firms up a little an can simply be cut away. Do you do some clean up right as soon as it is placed in the bedding or do you let it sit for a while to stiffen up a little?

Re: HS Precision Barrel channel off center

I can't help myself to wait and then cut away the bedding, so I use q-tips soaked in WD-40 to clean up the excess after wiping the major stuff off with a small rag. Thanks for that tip from William Roscoe. Anyway, I have never had a problem doing it that way..

Re: HS Precision Barrel channel off center

I might call them and see what they say, but I planned on bedding it anyway, but it never hurt to ask for a suggestion from them. I called there before to get my stock painted, good ole South Dakota boys that run the place.

Re: HS Precision Barrel channel off center

A little of each technique I guess.

I do use guide screws. They are basically just alignment studs to keep the action straight and true. Wrap them with a little tape to help center them in the action.

As far as clean up, I do use the q-tip and WD40 method as described in the forums. I don't go hog wild with it but get it fairly clean with it. I also come back a little later in if its got enough epoxy exposed to mess with it I'll use some broken pop-sickle sticks to scrape the excess away.
