Hey guys,

I know there's the hunting with suppressor thread, but as far as I know there's nothing there regarding hunting non-game animals e.g. coyotes and hogs in Florida with suppressors.

I know it's illegal to take game animals with a can but is it legal to use a suppressor for coyotes and hogs??

I called one fish and game office down in flordia and after about 20 min on the phone he said he wasn't quite sure. Coyotes is ok he "thinks". But not sure on the hogs.

Does anyone live down there and know for sure re: non game animals and suppressor use for hunting??

Thanks!

Re: hunting flordia non game with suppressor??

I was down there last year and they said no hunting any animal with a suppressor. I would check with FL game and wildlife to be certain....

I do take cans but not to hunt with

Re: hunting flordia non game with suppressor??

I called the northwest regional branch this morning, but the end result was ,"it looks like coyote is ok, but not sure about the hogs...."

Just stinks that the office didn't know for sure. I might try a different regional office.

Re: hunting flordia non game with suppressor??

When I lived in Fla approx. 15 years ago, I was told NEGATIVE on any hunting (game animals or otherwise) with a suppressor, but in that time, not a single person could point me to any provision of any state law/reg that said that. The regs are clear as to the prohibition on hunting game animals like deer, etc., with a suppressor (Fla. law erroneously refers to them as "silencers"), but mute as to varmints and nuisance animals (incl. hogs, etc.).

I would want something in writing, whether it is the state code, regs, fish and game policy, etc., to be sure if I was hunting on public lands. The problem, as with many states, what one @$$hole in a field office somewhere might tell you may be 100% the opposite position taken by another person, field agent, game warden, etc. The last damn thing you want to do is get popped by a game warden for allegedly hunting illegally with a suppressor on public lands. On private property, I would tend not to be so worried, but that's just me.

Re: hunting flordia non game with suppressor??

I'll keep digging around. I just figured if I was on some landownders property having a yote or hog problem, it'd be nice to 1) Be able to still hunt with my suppressor occasionally and 2) Just be nicer around the guy's property so it wasn't so loud.

To be fair the officer I spoke to was very understanding of why I wanted to use a can and he was actually for it. I appreciated the time he put in to research the issue, but in the end we were both left in a "clear as mud" mindset on the issue.

Re: hunting flordia non game with suppressor??

I was talking to one of my friends who runs a guide service in TX about this. From his understanding, you can legally do it in FL if you are on private land. I think the conversation went onto about how hogs are not considered game, but livestock, so on private land you can kill livestock with a NFA weapon.

Whats the rules up in Alaska about hunting with a suppressor?
I put Alaska on my preference sheet for my next duty location.

Re: hunting flordia non game with suppressor??

Can't use fully automatic guns or silencers for taking game in Florida per FWC 2011 Hunting Regulations Handbook.

Taken from FWC website regarding prohibited methods of hunting

Prohibited methods and equipment for taking game
-Centerfire semi-automatic rifles having magazine capacities of more than five rounds
-Nonexpanding full metal case (military ball) ammunition for taking deer
-Firearms using rimfire cartridges for taking deer
-Rifles or pistols for taking migratory game birds
-Fully automatic or silencer-equipped firearms
-Explosive or drug-injecting arrows or bolts
-Taking or attempting to take game with live decoys, recorded game calls or sounds, set guns, artificial lights, nets, traps, snares, drugs or poisons
-Shooting from vehicles, powerboats or sailboats moving under power. Motors must be shut off or sails furled, and the vessel’s progress must cease from such motor or sail before hunters may shoot wildlife.
-Herding or driving wildlife with vehicles, boats or aircraft
-Hunting turkeys with dogs
-Shooting turkeys while they are on the roost
-Taking migratory game birds over baited areas
-Taking turkeys over baited areas
-Taking turkeys when the hunter is within 100 yards of a game-feeding station when feed is present
-Taking spotted fawn deer or swimming deer
-Hunting with bows equipped with sights or aiming devices with electronic computational capabilities or light projection (laser) features during the archery season
-Hunting resident game using bows and crossbows with draw weights less than 35 pounds
-Using dogs without collars that identify the owner’s name and address
-Using dogs on private lands without written landowner permission
-Taking game with modern firearms while hunting during the archery, crossbow and muzzleloading gun seasons
-Placing, exposing or distributing soporific, anesthetic, tranquilizer, hypnotic or similar drugs or chemicals; preparation by baits; or by other means where game birds or game animals may be affected, unless authorized by permit from the FWC executive director

Re: hunting flordia non game with suppressor??

I was aware of the regs on "game animals" but one of the questions I had for fish and game in Fl was whether or not hog and coyote are considered game animals. Some of the laws consider hogs game animal but coyote is not considered a game animal.

It also says that hogs on private land are not considered game, but livestock.

Still, at least from my conversation this morning, it is still not clear....

Alaska is good to go hunting anything but two leggers with a suppressor. Best duty station I've had, wish I didn't have to leave...

Re: hunting flordia non game with suppressor??

I grew up in Florida, and hunted my whole life there, Still do on a private lease in North Florida. Private land is different, but for as long as I can remember there has never been a distiction between game and non-game animals when it comes to the hunting regulations on public lands. Below are the regs on coyote's and hogs. They appear to follow all normal game regulations on public land, with the exception of special permit for shining at night. Suppressors are still not allowed, at least they are not specifically stated for use on ferral species.

Wild Hog Regs

Coyote Regs

Re: hunting flordia non game with suppressor??

Thanks WitchDoc,

What's the difference on private land?? Is suppressor use allowed there??

Thanks, I Appreciate the inside info.

Re: hunting flordia non game with suppressor??

On private land, you can use a suppressor for hunting ferral hogs, they are considered livestock, and thus the private property of the land owner. Coyotes are actually regulated, because the counties where they are found in. On private land they are treated like ferral hogs, and there is no off season for private land, but on public land they have to be determined as a nuissance before being hunted, and the FWC will issue Gun and Light at Night permits or steel trap permits.

Re: hunting flordia non game with suppressor??

Great info, thanks Witchdoc... You don't by anychance know anyone in the northwest of Florida with a burning need to thin out the hog and coyote population do you??

Thanks again for the insight.

Re: hunting flordia non game with suppressor??

I hunt/camp at a friend's ranch down in Sebring, FL. I've only seen one Coyote and it was too fast to shoot, but at night I hear what sounds like dozens of them no further than a couple hundred yards.

But anyway it is private land so we can shoot 'em along with the hogs however we want. I've never shot anything aside from a dillo with a can though. When I'm hunting I never have a can b/c I'm usually there for deer/turkey..

Re: hunting flordia non game with suppressor??

I just got an email back from Florida FWC:

"Thank you for contacting the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

You can use a permitted suppressor to hunt pigs, raccoons, and coyotes (non-game animals) on private land only - no Wildlife Management Areas.

If you have additional questions please contact FWC's Hunting and Game Management at 850-488-3831."

10.5" LWRC 6.8mm, AAC M42K and 305 pounds of stinky, toothy, hate (the hog, not me).

As already stated, any NFA item is good to go on private land for non-game animals in Florida.

Sorry for bringing a thread back from the dead.

Do these rules apply for other “game” rules as well, as in if you’re shooting hogs/yotes on private land, can you do it while moving in a motorized craft?
