Anyone do any hunting out here? I have never huned before, its something I want to get into, I dont know a lot of people that hunt, so this is one of my resources I am looking to get some info on.

I have been looking at the diffrent game and tags that the NDOW offers, and it seems that mule deer will be a good starting point. As a beginner, is it really necessary to go out and get a guide? I am not new to the outdoors, I am familiar, but not highly experienced in tracking. I would be using my 06, and yes I reload, so I got that covered. I have been getting familiar with the laws and regs, and I am not planning to do it just for trophy, my grandfather told me if you kill it, then hope it tastes good. So I would be planning to put meat in the freezer as well. Where do I start?

Re: Hunting in Nevada?

I've hunted in Nevada several times over the years. It's one of my favorite places to hunt. 90+% public land, great trophy quality and some of the most beautiful country in North America. The only negative side is it's mostly all on a drawing and will be difficult to draw permits until you build some points.

Re: Hunting in Nevada?

See, that where I am fuzzy on how this goes. I know a lot of friends back in NJ who hunt white-tail a lot just apply for a single permit for that particular game. There was no drawing. If you wanted to go deer hunting, get a permit and go was how I understood it.

This makes me wish I got into it when I was younger.

Re: Hunting in Nevada?

As a resident your odds are better than the rest of us.
Depending on how picky you are I don't think it takes alot of points on some units. The better units take alot of points and or luck.
I think your about a month late if you didn't get put in this year.

Re: Hunting in Nevada?

Yeah, I hunt here it definitely takes some luck on your side to get drawn, that being said, I have drawn a tag 2 out of three years in area 221-223, just north of Pioche, it gets a decent amount of pressure during rifle season, but there is a few "walk-in" only areas that you can get away from the crowds. Other areas I have heard are Decent are areas 131-134, 231, 101-108, 241-244. You have to have your applications in before mid-April, if you have never hunted in Nevada you have to have your hunter's safety number put in the system before you are elgible for drawing. Good Luck!

Re: Hunting in Nevada?

Usually how it works is you pay a "drawing fee", basically a minimal amount to enter into the draw, then, they don't charge you for the tag, until you are successful.

Some other states, charge you up front the full amount and then give you a credit if you don't draw. Nevada though, they don't charge you until you are successful, some people were running into issues with credit card limits/bank account insufficient fundage...if you get drawn and when they go to charge your account, if it gets denied they automatically go to the next name and you lose.

They do have some "special draws" that they charge you for up front and you don't get your money back if you don't draw them, but it is set up kind of like a lottery system and you can buy as many $5.00 chances as you want and if your number comes up, you can hunt that species anywhere in the State with the weapon of your choice as long is there is an open season for that species at the time. Basically a "super-tag", or "governor's tag" idea. You also have options that you can buy up front or wait to see if you are successful in the draw or not, you can choose to buy your hunting liscence up front, or wait and only buy the liscence if you draw a tag, I always get mine up front with the hunting/fishing combo, it gives you a hunting and fishing liscence and you can hunt upland game birds and fish for the year on it, if you just go to huntnevada.com it has alot of info on there, you can also go to Walmart or a sporting goods store and pick up a reg book, they also have a unit map in them, then you can start planning what area you would like to concentrate on and start looking at maps...finding water sources in your area....making scouting trips...game cameras....whatever your heart desires

Re: Hunting in Nevada?

I noticed in your original post you had asked if you needed a guide...that all depends on you. Guides are an awesome way to go if you can afford it, they know the areas they hunt in like the back of their hand and know the habits of the animals they are after...that being said, I have always done it the poor boy way and went after them on my own. The closest we have gotten to a guided hunt was doing a drop camp through a guide service up in Montana a few years back...back on topic though, if you are willing to put in some time scouting your area and looking for game and learning their habits, you will be fine on your own. If you don't want to hassle with all that and can afford it, a guide is an excellent way to go.

But a quick couple of questions what about coyote hunting? basically predator hunting (not mountain lion) and varmint hunting. What are the basic regs that you have to comply with?

Thanks
