My uncle asked me a for advice for a new hunting rifle today. Well needless to say I know nothing about hunting, but I told him I knew some guys who could help. Well here I am fellas. Please advise in the following...

My uncle has a .270 and a 7 mag that he currently hunts with. He is looking for something new, this of course is where it gets tricky originally he said he wanted something in .300 win mag. I asked him what was the farthest shot he planned on takeing to which he responded 500 yards. Keep in mind he hunts mainly deer and has no plans on expanding to dangerous game or elk or anything like that. I told him I mearly though that was a bit much gun to hunt out to 500 yards with (at this point please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). He asked me my opinion I said I don't see any reason you couldn't shoot you .270 or 7 mag out to those ranges and be effective.
At this point he agreed with me and said he simply wanted another rifle maybe an inbetween caliber. So we searched around the b/s/t section on the hide and on gunbroker and he picked out a couple of things. at this point I'd love you guys opinion on the rifles he is looking at and any suggestions for a bad a$$ hunting rig as that's what he is after.

Rifle he liked
-Blaser 93 Pro camo .308 (what's the deal with the Zeiss illumination?)
-Nosler M48
??? What do you guys think?

P.s. I'm trying to get him in a GAP action or something like that but he doesn't want the tactical stock look. Any advice?

Thanks in advance guys.

-Cliffs-
-uncle wants new gun
-doesn't really know what he wants
-needs to be hunting rifle bigger than .308 smaller than 7mag

Go...

P.s.s- Needs to be a left handed action.

Re: Hunting rifle advice please...

My advice for hunting deer at 500y and under would end at 308 winchester (which is what I have used up till now) with 6.5cm, 260 (What I will be using from now on), 7mm08 and 243 all coming before it. This assumes he reloads and would be using hunting VLD's or A-max bullets. Factory ammo may work but it would be pushing it at best.

Re: Hunting rifle advice please...

As stated above, I just picked up a 280AI for a walking around 500 yard and below gun. Shooting the same bullets as my 7rem mag with the same powder cuts down on reloading supplies.

260 would also fit the bill.

Re: Hunting rifle advice please...

He def won't be reloading, if anything it would be me working up the load and loading them for him. I recommended .308 for the same reason you guys recommended it to me. Ease of match ammo without the need to reload. I know he is not shooting matches but I know the have match hunting ammo (excuse my terminology). Out of the calipers recomended above which would be the easiest to get good factory ammo?

I will check out the GAP Non Typical that just sounds bad a$$

I think as of now we will try and stay out of the magnum calipers. Unless you guys see a need to go there.

Corbon and Black Hills loads 260, Corbon only for 7mm-08 with the 168 vld and Hornady only for the 6.5 creedmoor. 243 you would be on your own for the long range stuff ie 105 VLD and Amax.
