Since you did not specify the specific survival situation, I will assume it is something like being stranded somewhere away from civilization due to an accident of some sort. In such a case, I would prefer a .22 LR if procuring food would be its only use, but, since there might be large predatory animals (2- and 4-legged), if only one choice is allowed, I would take a .44 Magnum double-action revolver, stainless steel, 4" barrel, with fixed sights.

Well, I have a handgun that has a high fair market value [IMHO]. And I doubt I will put it up for sale -since i hve not fired it in quite awhile- but in a yr or so I think i'm gonna retire from full time work. My bro has a cabin in Alaska and I hope to spend more time there and I want this handgun to fit my idea for an ideal carry gun while there.

My Sis packs a Glock G21SF . She lives in Kodiak Alaska and spends a lot of time hunting and fishing in the area . Her hubby packs a 12 GA pump full of slugs .

So for a pistol I would probably duplicate her choice .
