Gunsmithing I am so disappointed!

I live in Houston Texas and have been working on my build, I am at a point where I have gotten to certain aspects of it that require a quality Smith, but there are none to be found. I have searched and searched and the only smiths I have found have limited services offered. I know there are many high quality smiths on this site that are out of state but I prefer not to ship my rifle out to a smith to have work done, I am not made of money and can only afford to have one upgrade done at a time. Can anyone help with recommendations of anyone in or near Houston that has good skills?

Thanks

Brent

Re: I am so disappointed!

Sorry to hear, as I have been there. I highly advise you save the money to complete your build all at once. That works better than piece work, and is usually cheaper than doing it one step at a time. If you've never shipped a rifle for work before, I understand your concerns, but it is easy. As for great smiths you can trust to do the very best work and give you great customer service, here are two. Mark Gordon at Short Action Customs, and William Roscoe at LA Precision. Sorry, but I'm not a big fan of big company's where I don't know who's actually doing my work. Good luck.

+1 Mark will make ya happy!

Re: I am so disappointed!

Thanks, I looked up Spartan Rifles and it appears that they are located in California. I am looking for someone local as I am not comfortable shipping my rifle off and having to wait 12 weeks to get it back.

Thanks

Re: I am so disappointed!

Ask around at the local range. Chances are that there is some old timer who does not advertise but does good work. I know a couple of people like this in the Corpus area who only gunsmith for friends of friends, etc., and they do excellent work.

Re: I am so disappointed!

Pm me, I have a local smith that does my work. I would be glad to let you shoot the 2 rifles he has built me. I live in Spring and have a membership to Bayou rifle range down south of Highway 6 and 288. Or can go to Carter country here in Spring.

Re: I am so disappointed!

While Houston doesn't have some "big name" precision rifle gunsmiths they do have some with good names in other disciplines.

Briley is world class in shotgun sports.

I've had work done at MG Arms in Spring; they make world class hunting rifles. Also at Pitchford Custom Gunworks in Waller; the owner was a rifle-smith at Briley's for a long time and has his own shop now.

I wouldn't hesitate to have any of those companies do work on my precision rifle.

Re: I am so disappointed!

True, I have talked to Briley's, they are extremely expensive and are very limited on services offered. I have used MG Arms in the past was not happy with the work performed. Never heard of Pitchford Custom Gunworks but will defiantly give him a call.

You would think a city the size of Houston in such a gun friendly state like Texas would have more smiths but no!

Thanks

Re: I am so disappointed!

b,
It seems you designed this to fail, by creating your own problems.
1) limited budget
2) not saving and doing it all at once
3) self imposed no shipping rule.
You have stacked the deck against yourself.

Re: I am so disappointed!

If you don't mind driving to Austin Texas. Actually Round Rock, Mark Pharr at Tumbleweeds is pretty good. You can contact him here http://www.tumbleweedsrifles.com

I guess in some ways I have, true I do not want to ship my gun off and be without it for 3-4 months, I like to shoot what can I say.

I have done most of the work on my rifle myself and only need one thing done which is why I am looking for a gunsmith.

Re: I am so disappointed!

A couple exist in the Houston area. Try going up to Spring Guns and Ammo. A gentleman by the name of Ryan works up there and he is good smith. He does all the machine work at a friends shop up in the Willis area. If you want some on that does nothing but smithing then talk to his buddy Jim at JBJ Custom Guns.

Here is some of Jims work:
