Who remembers the ORIGINAL Leatherwood scope? By todays standards the glass is weak (its OK at best and poor when compared to todays great optics), and the magnification even weaker (3-9x). The real genius of the Leatherwood design was (still IS) the auto ranging reticle. No math was necessary, no counting dots, nothing but bracketing the target by adjusting the power (which literally raised or lowered the angle of the scope in its mount) and pulling the trigger.
I cut my teeth on a M21 equipped with the ART scope. It was fast and deadly. When I was forced to switch to a "modern" scope with Mil Dots I had to relearn how to "look through a scope". I had a eye/brain issue. I found myself reaching out to touch the dots as I counted them. Worse I wanted to use my trigger finger to "count" the dots.
Today I "get" that Mill Dots have advantages, Ive learned to count without my fingers; but I really miss the ART. The modern (civilian) Leatherwood models are NOT the same, the adjustments are all internal. I miss the ART.
Id love to see a modern version of the original ART with modern quality glass.
