I have a dilema on which rifle to buy...

Alright, I'm not looking to spend very much money here, but I need your perspective though. I'm not sure my wife will see the logic here.

I have a 700 sps varmint in .243. I just got a b & c medalist varmint stock for it. Love the stock. I bought the gun solely for trying to shoot/hit something at 1000 yards. I read on here that the Remington factory barrel would stabilize the hornady 105 gr amax bullet, but my rifle will not i.e. 4.5" to over 5" groups at 100 yards with the bullet.

So, I'm a little frustrated, but not much.

Here's my thoughts: buy a remington 700 sps varmint in .223 for an interim gun. I can get a good deal on one right now. Drop it in my b & c, and shoot up to 60 grain bullets out of it. Right now as it stands I'm not ready to shoot at 1000k anyway. I need more trigger time at 100, and a .223 would give me that. I would like to minimize dollars lost here - which is why I'm looking into getting almost the same rifle in .223 (it's the one they sell at Dicks with the camo stock).

Or, I could take a bigger loss and get the 700 sps tac in .223, or the model 7 predator in .223, or keep saving up cash til I get close to $1,000 and build a good AR with a wilson match stainless barrel with a 1/8" twist.

I have a winchester model 70 lightweight in .223, but the sporter barrel heats up too much. My goal is when I go to the range to shoot that I get to shoot at least 50 to 100 rounds.

The 700 sps varmint only has a 1/12 twist, but everything else has a 1/9. I'm not looking for "this" 223 to be my long-range rig, just a practice rig. Then later down the road build a 243 with a 1/8" twist or whatever is recommended.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: I have a dilema on which rifle to buy...

Just know that varmint rigs are just that.....for shooting light pills at high velocity. They usually have too slow a twist for heavier bullets....which unfortunately is what you need for the shooting you want to do.Bottom line...you have the wrong rigs. You need to get the Tac rifle for your desired shooting...and to keep from wasting even more money on wrong rifles.
Just saying...

Re: I have a dilema on which rifle to buy...

That's exactly what my wife said, but she doesn't shoot. So I wanted to get some opinions from other shooters.

I tell ya though. If someone is looking for a varmint bolt rig Dick's Sporting Goods has their Remington 700 adl varmint that comes with a cheap 4x12 scope on sale for $449. Then they have a $50 mail in rebate. After rebate and taxes for me that would only be $433. That's a heck of a deal for a new Remington 700.

One thing that kills me about Remington though is that they have discontinued the Model 7 predator in .223 with the 1/9" twist. The model for 2011 has a 1/12" twist.

Re: I have a dilema on which rifle to buy...

I hate slow twist factory barrels. Have you shot ammo loaded with lighter "varmint" bullets yet to see if the rifle is a decent shooter yet? If it still groups badly then shoot a buddies gun that is proven accurate and if you're still getting bad groups the problem lies not with the gun but the shooter... I'm sorry to have to mention that it could be you but I have to ask and I mean absolutly no offense by this and hope it won't be taken with distaste. But if you are capable of shooting well then I'd say to put the 243 back in its origional stock and sell it. The buy another 700 and put it in your B&C and see how that goes. Hell you might even want to check your action screw torque to see if it's up to spec or not. That could cause problems as you're having. And make sure the barrel is fully floated as well. Have you looked down the barrel for any burs? I'm just trying to think of some possible things that could be going on to produce those groups.

Hope this helps,
-Dylan

Have you tried the 6mm - 95gr SMK? That will stabilize in a 1/9 twist barrel. It should get to 1000yds supersonic pretty easily in a .243Win. If it shoots decent, I would recommend shooting it until the barrel burns out ~2-3000rds, then rebarrel to whatever suits your fancy.

You're happy and your wife's happy....

I have a .223 that I just bought for my Doughter that was an SPS Varmint 1-12. She pobably won't shoot past 500 for a while but when she is ready I will re-barrel it in a 1-8.

The SPS Tactical, 700LTR and 700P all have the faster twist and will shoot the 68's and maybe the 75's.

I have a 1-8 twist .223 that I shoot a lot in my AICS for practice. Great trainer.

Good Luck,

The remington in the b & c stock has a lot of wiggle room where it fit in the recoil lug recess. I've got it bolted tight, but I know I am going to have to bed the recoil lug area at least to get the absolute best fit.

I got a 3/4" group (100 yds) out of the gun using Hornady 87gr bthp, IMR 4350, and cci 200 primers. I am just an moa shooter right now - not sub-moa. I'm out of practice.

I don't have any of the 95 smks yet, but will get some of those and the bergers to try.

Re: I have a dilema on which rifle to buy...

Yeah then definatly try the Berger's and SMK's and see how those do. Your groups should shrink, I can't really see having problems with a bit lighter bullets that will fit your twist better.
