Is there anywhere with service cleaning etc instructions for this old can? It says SDW inc Alt. Ga. stamped Cobray M11 9mm can and of course a serial #. This is a multi piece tube with removable end caps on both ends a short front tube with a longer end tube. Thanks in advance for any help. PG

Sorry I missed this. I am very familiar with these units. You essentially have to determine if this suppressor is still in its original form. If it is, you will want to send it to one of a number of places and have them bring the can up to modern standards. The exterior would be left in its exact original form but completely refinished, the inside would be upgraded to a degree that the suppression would be outstanding by any standard.

If it was me, I would not hesitate to spend the bucks to have it brought all the way up. There is no improvement in value of keeping the unit with its original internals, just the opposite. The increase in value comes with state of the art internals. I have upgraded throughout the years with similar cans and would have it no other way. IF it is original is has a port primary with eyelets, perf trap core with spiral diffuser and the earliest end cap, all are not efficient. The big leap of faith comes way past where I think you are now and choosing between a number of late gen baffle/spacer armatures....or...a fixed welded core. In other words, a crackable can to a seal unit. We can discuss the plus/minus.

If it has this end cap, let me know.

If it is substantially longer, especially with the end cap shown, let me know.

Especially if it dumps with spacers like this guys..

It looks like that last picture but I have not taken it apart nor shot it yet. I have been too busy with work this last week. I would bet that its original and I would have no reservation having it updated unless the cost made it smarter to just by a new modern can. I will try to get some images up today although I am not sure how to post pics. Thanks PG

Best to have the right tool to twist the rear brace out.

with rear wider diameter than front (upper pic)?
with front and rear tubes equal diameter (lower pic)?

Lower pic all the same size tube. Thanks PG

I dont have a website to post the pics to unless facebook would work. I can email them to you if you like? PM me if you want me to do that. Thanks PG

No problem, a refitted SWD 9mm that they nicknamed the H.E. for High Efficiency (in its day, moving from the perf core spiral secondaries would have been.) Because you pointed out the variant with the the tube spacer separate from the punch formed baffles and that particular endcap, your unit was upgraded at AWC in the early 90's. If you find the baffles are formed with the spacers, that work was done at SWD, gen II. Take off your end cap and peer in and you see the block washer with two holes facing you, you will need two tools to take it apart. The first is for the first stage exterior tube junction (got holes on the seam between the two tubes?) And a second tool that, when you take of the endcap you send down the tube to interface with those two holes I mentioned earlier.

Exterior tool (SWD genII - spacer made as part of washer)

Interior tool (yes, its an M10, they look they same)

You can take your apart and clean it out if you want.

I got to shoot it a little yesterday I felt like it was fairly loud but seemed ear safe to me. Since it shoots from an open bolt does that make it louder then some others or would this have nothing to do with it? I will try to take it down tonight and see what its made like. Thank you very much for the help and images. PG

Re: I just got a M11 9mm SMG with a old SWD inc CAN

Yes, louder, and not just because of the bolt slap, but because its blowback under pressure. As I mentioned, you have a choice, if you send that can in to have a welded core placed in it you will end up with a very quiet can, significantly quieter than what you currently have. If you were to take that newly upgraded can and thread it on, say a Contender (eliminating all mechanical noise), it would as quiet as a .45 suppressor would be. Newest baffles, subsonic, huge volume, FA first stage. Like hitting a hammer in wet mud.

Good luck.

The high cyclic rate of a bone stock M11 makes the can sound louder. I have an M11 with a Bowers CAC-9 can. At high rate (over 1000 rpm) it's fairly loud. With a Lage slow-fire upper (bringing the cyclic rate down to 600-700) it's very quiet, like night and day. And that's dry, not wet.

Where do you send them for updates and what is the cost range? Thank you for the help. PG

Well the old can is now at AWC for updating to modern insides. I cant wait I am sure it will be a great improvement. I have a few AWC cans now and couldnt be happier with them. I have several pending that I am really excited about since the first few I did steel and the pending ones are Ti. PGG
