Hello all,

I am needing opinions/first hand experience on a new 6.5x47L bullet. As I'm sure you know the Berger 130-140VLD's are sold out everywhere and backorders at most places are not expected to be filled till March, maybe later. Anyone know why?

I have a custom built 6.5x47L on a Defiance action with a match chamber and .160 freebore. This is my main hunting rifle now. I've been using the VLD's with great results but I'm about out and I need something else. I'd like to stay in the 130gr area on this bullet. I've looked at the Scenars and they seem to be easy to get and in stock most places. Again, this is a hunting rifle that is mainly used for coyotes and sometimes deer inside 600yds. I realize it doesn't take bullets that shoot .1/4" groups to kill a animal, but I'd still like whatever bullet I choose to give similar accuracy results.
I'm currently running Lapua brass, CCI450, 37.5gr Varget, Berger 140 VLD's.
Any advice is appreciated.

just looking on midway bc it is easy to see all the 6.5mm offerings

looks like 139 scenars, 120 amax, 130g scirrocos, 129 interbonds would all work

if not grab some balistic tips, partitons or any of barnes bullets will work great for inside of 600yds

Ive been on midway and looked at the offerings. I was just wanting to get some first hand opinions of some that other people have used and their results in the field. I was looking at the Scenars, but I've never used them. I was also looking at the AMax's and I've used those before in a 6mm that I had.

Scenars should be great. I picked up 1000x 123's a bit ago, just got 50 loaded up last night, I'll get to the range with them on Thursday and I'll share the result, but they are pretty well liked.

EDIT- I don't hunt though, so I won't be sharing valid hunting experience.

Yes, I know why. The 6.5mm jacket machine at J4 Precision has been broken since March-ish, 2010. They have continued to tell Berger and JLK - the two manufacturers using J4 that I am aware of - that the machine is about to go back on line, but now 9 months later, that story is getting old. The jackets could be ready tomorrow or they could be ready 6 months from now.

BobinNC.....thank you very much.
They did not have any of the 130-140 VLD's in stock, but the guy I spoke with was very helpful and very nice. Seemed like he actually cared and wanted my business, you don't see that type of stuff much these days. He took my name and number and said he'd give me a call as soon as he got some. May be a while, but since he was so nice I'll certainly be ordering other bullets from him now until the Bergers are back in stock.....Midway just lost some business.

Re: I need a new 6.5x47 bullet since no Bergers

I ran Sierra matchkings and scenar 123's in my lapua, but don't know if these would have enough expantion to work well as a hunting bullett.

Its not in the weight range that your looking for but I ran some 95 gr v-max's through mine. They made a good varmint loads and should work well for coyotes, just don't know if it would have enough energy for deer sized game. I ran the V-max's with CCI450's and varget. Turned out to be a quit accurate little load. Maybe you could get a box of those to coyote hunt with until you find some 130 gr bullets or the Bergers become available again. BTW I had the same trouble when I tried to find the 130 bergers for my Lapua.

Hope this helps.

Trevor,

Get some 123 AMAX for Coyotes and Deer while we wait for this run of 6.5 to complete. Berger is making the jackets now. They had to retool their 6.5 setup. I've heard that the 130 VLD's might be shipping to dealers as early as 1/11/2011.

Start about 37.5gr Varget, you should find a sweet spot between there and 38.6gr Varget. Keep in mind the ogive on the 123 AMAX is a little more forward to accommodate the Grendel. But they shoot well through my x47 Lapua while I wait for the VLD's to show up.

Re: I need a new 6.5x47 bullet since no Bergers

From Michelle G at Berger they were making 6.5 bullets in this order
currently running 140 VLD Hunters, the the 130 VLD Hunters, then the 140 VLD' and then the rest of their line up. So that comes from the horse's mouth and confirmed by Teresa in Customer Service! Just a while to get them out to vendors.

Re: I need a new 6.5x47 bullet since no Bergers

I've shot about 800 of the 123 Amax's from my LR-260 24" upper (260 Rem, not a 6.5x47).

They do really really well inside 800yd but around then the speeds that I can get the 140 Amax's to end up winning out.

I've shot them to 1200 and they still do fine, but the bullet is really starting to slow down and getting blown around by the wind a lot.

That's what I was told too, and that seems to be the case. The 140gr hunting VLD is now in plentiful supply at Third Generation Shooting Supply, when virtually nothing was available in 6.5mm last time I checked two weeks ago. They seem to get stuff from Berger fastest, and their prices are great. Also read somewhere (accurateshooter.com forums, I think) that they are also now in stock directly from Berger, though the prices won't be nearly as good.

Re: I need a new 6.5x47 bullet since no Bergers

I finished up shooting the last of the 130's I had loaded this past weekend. I have a few 140's, but I'm going to try the Scenars. I'm sure about the time I get a load worked up for them the Berger 130's will be back out on the shelves.
