I need a trainer

I am having all sorts of trouble at the range with my 308. Positioning, trigger control and tons more. I just can't seem to get in the ready. There is also the consideration that I am overcoming a handicap. I have always used my dominant left eye. Now I am conditioning myself to right side. It has been a learning curve but it is coming together. Consistant .5 moa so far.

But I need more trigger time. I can make a 100 yard range here at the house.

What would be a good build for 100 yard trainer?

I am thinking a Savage TRII. But I need to stay cheap as posible on this.

Re: I need a trainer

The MKII TR would make a good trainer for you. For close to 1/2 the price the Savage MKII FV will do the same thing. The difference is the regular stock & the barrel is 2" shorter than the TR, which comes with a tactical stock & a 22" barrel. Both have heavy barrels & both shoot well. Depending on the day, I can shoot better with one or the other, with neither rifle showing a clear advantage over the other one. Both Savages are great rifles.

Re: I need a trainer

See if you can find a used Savage MkII Heavy barrel, and then build it from there. Boyds sells the TR stocks, once and a while you can get scratch and dent stocks for little to nothing off of Boyd's site. Have a look Here and Here for threads on very similar builds.

Re: I need a trainer

Essentially any .22LR bolt gun in good working condition will serve your purposes, and for training, 50yd, even 50ft is sufficient distance. With the .22LR, the accuracy comes mostly from the cartridge itself. Unless the rifle has some mechanical flaw, it's going to do an adequate job.

While fine workmanship, elegance, and accuracy are all desirable; all you really need is something that's reliable and sufficiently accurate to reveal your shooting capabilities. For training purposes, a rifle which will deliver an honest 1MOA is plenty accurate enough. I make do, and do well, with a very basic Savage MKIIF.

Your primary training expense should be for ammunition. Spending extra for deluxe anything is pretty much counterproductive.

Re: I need a trainer

I have several 22's that I shoot but find myself using the mkII gl model. It has a sporter barrel which is very light but enjoy this aspect of shooting with it because it recoils enough to move your poa and forces me to rely on my mental capacities and hopefully have recall of my sight picture. Because of the recoil also it ensures that I have good trigger control and follow through. But for precision shooting with or without a scope I use my trusty remington 513T. It has a 27" heavy barrel and there is no recoil.

a "basic" savage or marlin heavy or sporter barrelled rifle will fit the bill, even one without the special triggers or stocks. you can always "tweek" and add fancier stuff as budget and demands allow.

once you have that basic but good foundation in a rifle, the budget could be directed to better grade of match ammo, wolf mt or extra seems to be the go to ammo for both. a more consistant ammo means there is less doubting if it was you or the ammo that caused the "mistake", which equals QUALITY trigger time.

then there is the optic. so do some searching on previous threads here for one that fits your needs, both budgetary and utility wise. suggesting any will make this go off topic, but everything is used here from the $69.00 walmart centerpoints to $690.00 leopolds and such, and there are good cases presenting for using any of them, so do some reading.

Re: I need a trainer

Well, I am going to sell everything I got and buy a trainer and use the rest to pay bills. I am tired of owing. I may offer some things up for trade until I reach 100 posts so keep your eye please.

Re: I need a trainer

trainer rifle, decent to good optic, lots of good ammo, any extras (bipod, wind meter, shooting mat, data book, a nice range box, spotting scope, etc.) then bills

Re: I need a trainer

Which 22 would give me more of a feel like the 700? Maybe a CZ 452 Varmint. I would actually like to build a fairly good quality 22lr with someting similiar to a M40 or M40A1 and not exceed $1,000.00 for a scoped rifle. I will be shooting out to 200 right off the bat.

Re: I need a trainer

to me that cz does have more of a "big gun" look and feel than a savage or marlin, but to each his own, you should fondle one first.

to me, if your going to sell off stuff you have lying around, a marlin or savage would be more affordable. you can put more $ into an optic and ammo, get a boyd's tacticool stock, and a tactical style stock to upgrade the 700. choate makes an affordable tactical stock for the 700.

then you'll practically have a a matching set in feel dept. between the 700 and the trainer, with some scratch left over for a few bills.

Re: I need a trainer

one possible option to the cz the remington model 5 or charles daly 22 made by zavasta just down the road from cz I think ussg is importing them now - very similar at half the price

Re: I need a trainer

After reviewing Top Predator's build writeup, I am simply going to point you to it.

Plainly fabulous!

I'm kinda wound up about trying my own approach to something very similar.

Re: I need a trainer

I just set up a new Savage MK II TR for 100-200 yard practice.

$399 rifle at Sportman Warehouse
$149 BSA 6-24 @ MidwayUSA
$39 weaver tactical 6 screw mountsMidway USA
$27 notch Harris style bipod http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2015714#Post2015714

Total of $604 This shoots as well as my high dollar 10/22 with no additional work needed. Have shot my best scores at 25, 50 and 100 yards with this set up.

It shoots well at 100 but runs out of adjustment soon afterwards so will need 20 MOA base to get scope zerored at 200. I can hit the target with Kentuky windage but its hard to call it a group.....more like a large random pattern.

Wish i had started here instead of going down the 10/22 road to build a trainer. shooting it next to my Rem SPS in a B&C tactical stock the ergonomics are very similar.

Re: I need a trainer

Thank you for this post. I am planning on going down this road very soon. I am going to post some goodies after I hit 100 posts. But I may be SOL soon. I heard throught the grapevine that we are getting annexed into the city. This will definitely hurt my trigger time.
