Well, I purchased the 700XCR tactical finally, and I found an optic for a great price, (under half price) but I still have a few pieces to put purchase. I have been looking at all of the threads about brakes and such, but I still can't decipher what I need. The XCR is chambered in .300 winnie, and I believe the barrel is .820, and it is the factory barrel with the trinyte coating. I need a brake on it for extended shooting sessions, and wanted to go with the Badger FTE, because more than one or two people recommended them. However, I am not EXACTLY sure which one to purchase. The gun is a M700 XCR Tactical Long Range with the factory barrel. What do I need? What do I need to have done to the gun and can an average gunsmith do it? I won't be there in person when this is done, as I am still in Afghanistan. I am going to have my brother take the gun to the smith.
Additionally, if anyone wants to chime in on a recommendation for rings and a good base, or the aluminum bedding block in a laminate thumbhole from Stocky's, I wouldn't be mad.
Thanks again, Captain Gibson.

Re: I need brake help. I don't know $hit.

You will want the 5/8-24 threaded model made for barrels with a minimum OD of 0.80”. It is Badger Part #306-38B. As for installation, your smith will need to follow the mounting instructions that are available from Badger Ordnance (they are very straight-forward so a reputable smith shouldn't have too much trouble with it...do your homework on smiths though before some jackass hacks up your barrel!). Also, the smith will need to properly bore out the exit holes in the brake to the proper size. Badger suggests 0.020" over bullet/bore diameter OR...for .308 cal, 0.328".

Here is a direct link to the specs for the install: http://badgerordnance.com/wp-content/plu...bbl%20print.pdf

As for rings/bases...I like Badger Ordnance and Seekins, but to each their own.

Can't help you with the bedding block/etc. for the laminate stock...that's out of my knowledge base. I am sure someone here has experience with the mods to made a laminate stock better/more rigid with additions like the pillar bedding, etc.

GOOD LUCK!!

Re: I need brake help. I don't know $hit.

I would put pillars and bed too.But let your smith do what he wants. He will tell you the way he wants to do it and why he wants to do it that way.

Re: I need brake help. I don't know $hit.

The bedding block looks like a good option for the stock. It has pillars to avoid compression of the laminated stock. You can also skim bed bedding blocks for an even more precise fit.

Re: I need brake help. I don't know $hit.

The XCR Tac LR comes with a Bell & Carlson made synthetic stock that has the molded in aluminum bedding block. I have found these stocks to be of good fit and quality. My 300 WM XCR tac fit very well in the block. The only things I would do would have the 'smith who threads for the brake do a skim bed on the factory stock and then get an Eagle stock pack to give you just a little bit more cheek weld.

Re: I need brake help. I don't know $hit.

I know that the gun comes with a pretty good stock, but I have always wanted the laminate thumbhole, and the Accublock design seems to be in good working order. I dont' like the stock on the XCR TACT, so I would replace it with something anyway.

Re: I need brake help. I don't know $hit.

OK. You're not a fan. As I am not a fan of the laminate thumbhole. After all the negatives I've seen posted about Stocky's I am not a fan of them either. My advice would be go ahead with the lam TH stock. This is the same deal that T/C uses for the Icon stocks and it works very well. My guess is that someone will want your factory stock and you should have no trouble selling it for nearly enough to offset the cost of the Stocky's TH.

BTW, on this Memorial Day weekend, I want to thank you for your service to our country.

Re: I need brake help. I don't know $hit.

Come on man, you were supposed to say something like "OH WOW, they are the best" or "That will be the most accurate and best stock on earth"...
I will search again for Stocky's, and maybe I will turn up more than I found last time. Thanks brother and yall have fun this Memorial Day weekend. Do me a huge favor and cook a thick ribeye a little rare for me.
